My advice is to turn off that grade display.
I recall having mine on and when I saw numbers that were 20+% it was defeating. Can make one not want to ride that garbage but hills are an evil that must be beaten to death.

I think she was smiling cause this was the 3rd week in a row we did this rid and she felt really good on this one. It was like going from terrible to good, then really good!

I like having the display because if I'm struggling on what I think is a flat road but turns out to be a 4-5% grade it gives me a sense that I'm not making less progress than I should be given the perceived effort.

Sometimes I turn off all the displays except the map.

I agree hills need to be beaten to death, but until I get a power meter (unlikely to be anytime soon) the grade indicator can be what helps me gauge how I'm doing.

Don't you just love those. Ridding alog pushing hard and only going 15mph then find out it was a 1 mile 3% grade you were going up.

As for a powermeter... Best investment I ever made (with the exception of a tonne of ammunition and weapons)

Today I headed out to a trail I haven't ridden before. It's part of a long network of trails that encompass over 35km of nice wide MUPs. Today I stuck to the western loop for a nice 30 km out and back, at a slightly easier pace than normal for me since I did 25 km yesterday and this was the first time I've ridden this once. That idea lasted until about 10 km from getting back to the car, when incoming rain clouds more or less compelled me to pedal my ass off to try and stay on the leading edge of the rain and avoid the downpour behind me. I managed it, but only just.

August 12 - 30.1 km
MTD - 193 km / 450 km
TTD - 567.3 km

My goal is to get my first ever 100 miles completed. I started riding august 1st and so far I've ridden 67 miles. I'm sure I can make 100 miles by the end of the month at the pace I'm riding. Hopefully I can blow past my goal!!

Had my kids for the week last week (I'm a divorced dad) so I was off commuting for an entire week. Took a few rides around the neighborhood with the kids but nothing substantive in terms of miles. Smiles however ... an entirely different story!

Anyway ... back to commuting today.

8.1 - 24 miles
8.13 - 24 miles

Total - 48 miles

8/9: 0 Miles. Rest day.
8/10: ~5 miles of hiking. After a few months off the trail, this was a nice comeback, I will definitely fit in more hiking trips as Autumn is approaching us.
8/12: 14.6 Miles. A trip to the grocery store to return a couple rental DVDs to Redbox. This ride was fantastic after 4 days off!
8/13: 0 Miles due to rain - Another unexpected break from the bike.

MTD: 106.8 Miles. (Goal: 300 Miles)
YTD: 816.4 Miles. (Goal: 1,000 Miles)

Went out to collect a new doodad for my PC. The company will deliver (free) but sitting on my ass waiting for it to arrive doesn't address my waistline and a 70-mile round trip on the bike does. Besides, it was a nice day and I wanted some miles.

Set a new PB for the first 100k of 3:42 moving time and about 3:55 total time (including the time it took to stop and buy my doodad). Now my legs are tired and I'm fighting the urge to consume just about everything in sight.

Aug 14 - 70 miles

stepped out of the house around 10 or 11 and thought it felt real nice out... so I mapped out a nice 20 mile route, got something to eat, got the bike setup to go and went for a ride... was in my new SPD sandals with my new A520 pedals (I was amazed at how much lighter they where vs my '90's low end SPD's... riding started off nice, about 8 miles in I stopped at my LBS where I got the frame from so I could finally show it off to the owner... ended up spending a bit to much time, by the time I got back on the bike it was VERY hot out... ended up cutting a section off the ride... was a very slow ride... strava indicates avg temp being at 111*F... I think that is a bit high but it was def in the mid 90's with 100+ "feels like" numbers... going to really have to get some miles in to meet this months goal... I start back to school next week and the kids the week after so we'll see if that happens :-/

Headed out to the trail I hit on the 12th with my girlfriend today. For the first 20km my pace was pretty relaxed as I was staying with my GF on her Escape RX-1, but then for the last 10 I got in front and hit it so at least I felt like I pushed myself a little bit. That set of trails is absolutely amazing and I can't wait to go there again.
