Discoloration of carbon seatstay?
I recently got this Trek Madone 2.1 as part of a trade. It has severe paint damage on the left carbon seatstay. I have no idea what happened to the frame as the previous owner didn't tell me.
My friend told me it's clear coat reacting with UV radiation.

i'd send it into Calfee via Jax bicycle center, probably just needs to be stripped back and new clear applied

Is it just the clear coat?

I am not an expert, but I would buy that explanation. That was my first guess as well.

Carbon Fiber is UV safe. But the polymer resin bonding it together is not and will degrade. The paint/clearcoat used by bike manufacturer's is the UV shield.

I think it's a fiberglass repair job to what appears to be a crack over the "T" in the Trek logo. There's a little bulging at both ends where the glass tapers into the stay.

My friend said it could be the epoxy too. He suggested I wet sand it with 600 grit sandpaper, and if the water turns out clear then the frame is worn down to the resin.

IMO what happened there is that for some reason they put cheappy spray can clear coat in that stay. Maybe to fix some bad finish at some point... Bad cheap spray can like rustoleum spray for example does that, dont think is a problem with the resine... the clear turned yellow and need to be scrapped off. If you notice the other side is just fine, and clearly the clear coat in one side is basically gone. Who knows what crap trek used as clear as well so the stuff just reacts and gets yellow due to the sun (UV).
The fix is easy... sand it really well with 600 or 400 wet sand paper but be careful with going to the carbon fibers and re spray with polyurethane car type of clear or get u-pol clear coat in a can.
Sand the clear for blemishes and polish, done. If you know what are you doing that thing can get fixed like in 1 hour.
Good luck.

IMO, it's probably not practical to pay anyone to fix that frame. It's a lower end Madone with an aluminum frame and carbon seat stays. It isn't worth very much, and I doubt you'd get your money back on a professional repair. That's why somebody did the DIY fiberglass repair job.
