Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I love the green bits on the Merak frame, but the bar tape color looks slightly off the color of the frame accents. Other than the tape it's a definite hot.

Crank is ok. 3 and 6 O'clock and along the down tube is what is looked for here. He is looking into spider rings and he would most likely agree with you on the cranks.

Hey now, you can knock the bike, but my crank position is perfectly acceptable.

Rule #26// Make your bike photogenic.

When photographing your bike, gussy her up properly for the camera. Some parameters are firm: valve stems at 6 o’clock. Cranks never at 90 or 180 degrees. Others are at your discretion, though the accepted practices are include putting the chain on the big dog, and no bidons in the cages.

I'm assuming the 90* and 180* are from the center of the crank and straight down (crank can't be in 12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock position), however, I guess if we're talking 180* from the seat tube, then you're right and I failed.

Also, curious what stem length you'd suggest, the bike came with a 100, but I put a 110 on as I felt too upright. I find anything less than 100 to look stumpy though.

As for the seat post and crankset...in time, I'm sure I'll do something. The wheels I can't deny, they're just deep for the sake of being deep. Different strokes for different folks. However, after riding them, I have to say I like them a lot.

the 110 looks just fine Ed. The ONLY thing (aside from the chainrings) that draws my attention is how far you have the bars rotated down. I wonder if you were to rotate them up 2-3mm it would flatten out the top bar and give a better aesthetic line from the stem to the hoods. Maybe that is what is making the stem look odd to Bobones?

HOT because you don't see many of these. but i agree, although the bar tape matches some accents on the bike, color doesn't do it for me.

Sorry, I was being an ass. I think the grid lines in the background are messing with the bike's own lines and you should probably take the photo from a lower point of view. Best position for crank is forward and in line with the chain stays IMO. Other than the crank, your bike looks great and is definitely hot. Probably much better in the flesh than your photo though.

Hot. I for one like the bar tape. Though my preference would be for a different saddle, I could definitely see owning this as is. I think it looks great.

agreed. And the bar tape is of just enough shades of green to make it look ridiculous... In a bad way.

No worries, this is the thread that allows people to be an ass. To be honest, most everything you said to change are things I still want to change, so I had to ask for more detail.

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding the bar tape, the Fizik tape came closest to matching the green accents on the De Rosa. On that pic, I'm sure the sunlight made the tape brighter than it actually is. Here's another pic and the tape doesn't seem as bright.

Congrats on the new bike. IMO, the only thing I'd change are the chainrings. Everything else flows with the rest of the bike. HOT Evo.

Thanks. It may even look more appealing to you after I send it to the custom painter during the winter. I'm not changing the colors; I just plan on having the mechanical cable guides on the head tube and rear chainstay shaved off for a cleaner look. But unlike my previous builds, I plan on keeping the De Rosa and the Ridley for years to come.

Put me in the camp that likes the bar tape...if you're going to deviate from stealth perfection, then make a bold statement! You might even consider getting some custom green threaded Handlebra leather tape.

This De Rosa is super HOT as always. The component upgrade is great, although TBH the crank arms graphics from Rotor are not to my taste.

Thanks! And yep, the chainrings have to go...and they will! I knocked 100 miles on it today, it rode like a dream. The last 20 miles still managed to kick my ass, but the bike was nice.

And this! All of your bikes are outstanding and all the complaints about the bright green or the pink on the Ridley, make them that much better. The bikes standout as great bikes in general, and the colors turn heads and keep them there, whether the viewer likes it or not.
