Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it worth $53**********

Okay I have a '13 Orca by Orbea and it has Rival drivetrain............the FD is a bit lacking in my opinion. Is it worth $53 to upgrade it to a Force or not to all those who have had both and can tell me from real world ride experience?

In what way is your FD lacking? Could be a lot of things other than the FD - cables, shifter, dirt, chain etc., etc.

If you had a Ti caged Red FD, I'd say the Force FD was worth it, but not going from Rival.

I would put an Ultegra FD on there.

I'd say the SRAM FDs aren't great except for the Red Yaw, honestly. The Rival and Force are better than the Ti-caged old Red, but the Shimano ones are better.

You just bought the bike. Why not get a few hundred miles on it before you start swapping parts?

Yeah you are right! Maybe it will break in and do better. Just some slight cross chaining on some of the cogs and having a dickens of a time getting it to not do so. Will keep riding for now.

Is this your first compact crank? If it is, learn and embrace double shifting. Every time you make a front ring shift, bang three gears in the back at the same time.

Are you actually looking for the chain rub noise to go away by applying some FD trim when you shift?

The 10 speed Force and Rival front derailleurs are nearly identical. Its not worth $53 to upgrade from Rival. I dont actually know of any differences between them except the paint on one piece and the text rival and force.

Upgrading to the new Red front derailleur with the yaw cage is an improvement. It costs quite a bit more though.

No I have had several compacts over the years. My 105 system on my Aqua does not cross chain rub but this one does. If I am in the 34 front I can get to the 3 smallest cog before you start to hear a slight rub.

I'd probably try to adjust the front derailleur. It sounds with some tweaking of the limit screws, you probably make the problem, or most of it anyway, go away.

I also have a 2013 Orca silver that I built up with Force. The FD had its fair share of problems early on, but it finally seems to be coming along. Chain rub on the FD cage has been an issue, but it's gotten better. My 105 system never rubbed though.

On a different note, is the new SRAM Red yaw FD compatible with 2013 Force shifters?

I suppose theoretically the chain line on the bike is not as centered as others, so rub on one side of the cassette will perhaps be unavoidable, but I am still with the others... set the limits and set the cable tension... it will likely go away.

a 2014 force 22 front derailleur would be an upgrade in performance. a force 2012/13 10spd one would not be an upgrade - it essentially the same thing as a rival one. i don't have a link, but someone has tested it and shown 11spd force FDs are compatible with 10speed drive trains (although you might be a slight rub one in either the large or small cog if you're cross-chaining... so don't cross-chain).
