Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling doesn't take time away from our lives, it's the life we choose to live.
Those are big miles and I say good for her on reaching those goals. Maybe my time management is off a bit because the only way I could do that much riding is to either blow off work, my non-cycling wife, or my six year old kid. Some people have older kids and that makes a difference too.

Reducing sleep to about five hours max per night also helps the cause.

Having older kids does help. Mine are 9 and 12 and can be generally counted upon to manage their affairs for a couple of hours each weekend. That wasn't true several years ago and could not justify the time away from them.

As as for general time management, I use commuting to get miles and time in without making too big of a footprint. Getting up very early on weekends helps too. Finally, working out with a trainer or rollers can help with fitness while you remain available at the house.

Just do what you can. It is supposed to be fun!

Just starting to log miles...had a huge slump this year due to strange work schedule, bad weather, and not much motivation. Hopefully a change of scenery and relocating to Florida(hopefully soon) can turn this around. Hoping for 2,500 this year to start off really riding again

To five hours? Who gets more than 5 hours?

I have specific rides I'm looking forward to. (Solo rides, not group ones, those are boring and can be annoying.) Whatever number it comes to, that's fine with me. A lot of riding, sure, but if it's 4,726 or 5,103 miles, I'll be happy either way.

My goal for the past 4 or 5 years has been 8,000 miles.

I have yet to actually achieve it.

Closest I came was in 2012 when I hit a bit over 7,800. This year I only managed ~5,700 due to injury, travel, & crappy weather (but mostly that damn injury!).

So I think my mileage goal for 2014 is simply going to be "More Than 2013...and Don't Crash!"

I'd like to hit 10k, but 8k is more realistic.

10k is basically 200 miles a week, which isn't hard, but considering you'll have to put in a few 300 miles weeks to cover for sick days and vacations makes it daunting.

The main thing is to keep enjoying it.

Your assumption that anyone respects a fred's road miles is impressively delusional.

That being said, I'd like to get back up over 10K miles for this year, but nobody cares but me, so why am I even bothering to mention this here?
