Tire Cut Repair
I have a cut in my brand new tire that happened 12 miles into the ride. I actually heard the clack, clack, clack sound, from a piece of glass. I stopped and got it removed before it went through the tire and punctured the tube. Would you just ride it; glue it; fuse it with a red hot poker; what say you?

Repair tire with glue/rubber and use it as a backup tire or on you trainer. That tire is no good for full time service.

Can't tell for sure from the pic but the tire looks like it might be OK. Cuts in the rubber mean very little. What's important is if the cords are cut. It's judgement call, but if the cut through the cords is 2mm or less, I boot it, ensure that the tire doesn't bulge, and call it good. On a low pressure tire like on mtbs (30-45 psi) I tolerate bigger cuts. I have not found gluing the cut in any manner to be of value.

Clean it with alcohol, and allow it to dry. Inspect thoroughly. If it's not into the cords, fill the cut with "shoe goo" while it is fully inflated, and allow it to cure for 48 hours. Almost as good as new!

If cords are cut, with that big of hole, trash it.

If the cords are cut more than 1/8" you can save the tire by gluing a piece of 1/32" pipe gasket material (it needs to be fiber reinforced) inside the tire. I have gotten over 3500 more miles from a tire that had that kind of damage.
I use super glue and cover the patch with duct tape because the patch gets stiff and eventually frets through the tube. Don't ask me how I know this.
I have never had a failure, but I still place a repaired tire on the back just in case.

After a much closer inspection, I see that the cut did indeed go all the way through the tire, but ever so slightly. How in the world it did not get the tube is beyond me? In any case, I think that I will just replace the tire and stay out of the bike lanes where everyone throws their beer bottles. The worst part about all of this is that the cut happened on a shakedown ride on pavement, where I never ride! I ride gravel and never have flats or tire damage...
