Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's doubtful since November Bicycles tested the Rails against the Zipp 404 Firecrest and the aerodynamic drag was within about 1 watt.

The S-Works Tarmac is an SL4 just with different/lighter carbon.

I didn't have their Rails. I had their older rims.

Isn't the 11R frame of the s-works bikes constructed differently than the SL4? That was my thought anyway. That s-works tarmac is a pretty bike!

I have seen that written, but never explained. I am quite skeptical. I did read that S-work bikes are created early in the model year in support of racing teams throughout the world and they have the greatest attention to detail. My view is the Sworks is identical to the Pro/Expert only with 10r carbon. A bit more carbon is required for the same strength/stiffness which results in a couple hundred grams more weight. I would say the average weekend warrior will do just fine on the Pro model. My take.

my s-works weighed 14 pounds out of the box minus pedals.

From the specialized site:

>>>>>>>>
What is the difference between 11r, 10r, 8r, etc. carbon used on different Specialized bikes?

Last Updated: Oct 31, 2013 01:51PM PDT

The "R" value is an indication of the level of modulus of the carbon fibers used in frame construction. The higher the value, the higher the modulus.

Modulus simply refers to the stiffness of the individual fibers in the carbon matrix, which will dictate the overall stiffness and efficiency of the material. As the modulus increases, we are able to change the production process to produce a frame of equal or greater stiffness than that of a frame utilizing lower-modulus fibers.

As a general rule, each higher level of carbon will decrease frame weight on average 150-200 grams, and provide a stiffer, more nimble ride.

Yeah, but in terms of design they're the same. Meaning tube shape and size etc.

I'm not a weight weenie but mine weighs 15 lbs 6 oz. It's plenty light. Weighed with Rib Cage bottle holders, SRAM Garmin mount, 105 pedals, speed/cadence sensor, Zipp carbon bars, Zipp 202s, Red cassette, Romin Evo Pro saddle. This is how I ride it minus the Garmin and water bottles. S-Works is cool, but the SL4 is the best bang for the buck.
