Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cateye CD300-DW - Opinions?

Hi there,

I am looking to buy a computer and would like to know if anyone had any experience with the Cateye CD300-DW?

Here's a link to it on the cateye website below

Any opinions?

I've got one and it's great. I really like the multiple displays and there are a lot of additional functions...it's also coded so you will not pick up other signals, like another rider's wireless...no complaints from me.

I love mine (the cadence+speed) - it works perfectly. Bad part is there's only 15 codes, and I think it might have a problem with heart monitors... I don't have one so I wouldn't know.

One thing I should note - there was a recall on the first handful out of the factory, I was an unlucky sap who got one of the bad ones. They've fixed the problem since. Customer Service with Cateye is great.

I have a Polar S210 that is also coded, and no problems.

I will say again what I have said in every other thread that asked the same question that I love mine, and have never had any problems with it.

In all fairness I did a search and no one else asked this question. I'm sorry if I missed it. But thanks for your opinion on the computer.

These are the only three threads I found in Road Cycling. You did open this door, sorry.

I got mine last week and it's also been fine. And as a bonus, the CD300W has no problem picking up the wireless signal when using an HID light (the Light & Motion ARC Li-Ion).

I have had mine for about 3 months and have not had any problems. I like have cadence and speed available on the same display. I have used in conjunction with Polar coded monitor without any problems.

I like mine but I notice that when I get out of the saddle and crank hard, ie/ on climbs the cadence sensor does not pick up well. Doesn't seem to matter where I position the sensor. Soon as I sit back down to a smoother pedal stroke things work fine again. Anyone else have this problem?

I have two of these units, one on a tandem and one on a single. I like them EXCEPT, that the light down not stay on long enough and while it registers split times, one cannot see your current lap time UNTIL you have COMPLETED the lap (pressed the button)

Got one. Love it. It's set to Automatic mode so it goes to sleep when I'm done and resets the speed and cadence data before each new ride. At the end of a ride, I can check my avg. speed, avg. cadence for my log book. Little triangles tell me if I'm above, below or at my avg. speed/cadence. I don't use the lap functions and haven't used the trip function yet. A couple of times I've hearda a clicking sound; it was from the magnet on the spoke hitting something. I push it back into position, maybe tighten it a bit; off I go.

Is the signal strong enough to reach the front bars of a tandem?

Ronan,

I don't think your problem (readings go away when out of the saddle) is related to the Cateye. I used to have this problem as well, but for me, it was related to the flexing of the wheel. The flexing of the wheel would cause the sensor to be misaligned with the magnet. Could this be the problem?

bought one and love it, some small letters too small for me to read, but in time i will learn what the options are and will not miss being able to read number id's

replaced a mavic wireless, this one is much better i think, i did mount the magnet solo on the pedal spindle v using cateye supplied hardware and a plastic tie, looks 100% better and works fine

mounting bracket is good too and included, mounts just in front of stem

i'd go for it, some good bargain if you search internet

Can an owner of this model tell me if it has a raised profile? Most cyclocomputers have a flat profile, like a tablet or something. This one looks raised at the front, sloping down toward the rider, like a wedge with the blunt edge leading (if the pictures shown on Performance and elsewhere are showing it from the side).

No, I don't care about aero consequences; I am curious to know about its overall appearance.

Thanks!
David

I have one. It looks and works great!
Only caveat: I've had trouble with it in cold weather (below freezing) even with fresh batteries. The user manual warns of "reduced performance" at such temps, so I had fair warning.

It is flat, but it is somewhat thick. If you take it off the mount and place it on a table the face will be parallel to the table. I think what you are seeing is that people mount it so that it is angled toward the rider so that it can be seen. In the first picture you can see it somewhat in profile (ignore the second computer, long story). In the second you can see it from above, kinda rider-eye-view

edit: attached wrong picture. The third one is the profile shot.

I have a CD300-DW on each of my road bikes - I've been using them since last summer and so far there have been no problems whatever, and they've worked very well. I tweak the wheel size according to the tyres I'm using - although the instructions are hardly intuitive, but that's to be expected for a Japanese product with the destructions written in Japan-English. Once the tyres/wheels are calibrated, I've found the accuracy to be pretty good and consistent with the data I get from my Garmin Quest GPS unit which I started using last autumn.

I also use a Polar F6 HRM and have not noticed any problems with interference.
