I don't see a lot of these--1987 Mongoose ATB. The ride is sublime.
Question: what should I do if I ever need to replace the 126mm o.l.d. rear wheel? What about the brake pads for the u-brake?

^Wow, that's one big vintage Mongoose!
Rear wheel: You can easily cold set the frame for a 130mm OLD Freehub, or simply wedge it in there...only 2mm spread per side.
A 130mm road width will give you access to 8/9/10 speed cassette upgrade paths.
The U-brake is still sold today for BMX applications. But the threaded pads from modern canti and V-brakes available should also fit fine.

The '88 is sweet, for sure. The '87 frame is curiously similar to Raleigh's Mt. Tour series from that year.

I thought people might like to see my Rocky Mountain Sherpa. Can't find this one in the Retrobike catalogues, but I think it must be a 1993 model, because it seems the Exage ES group was only made that year.
The bike was in pretty good shape when I got it. I changed the stem and handlebars to give me a more upright position, and since I couldn't find a 1 ⅛ treaded stem with an integrated cable hanger in my co-op bin, I added a fork mounted hanger. That didn't seem to play well with the Exage canto, so I swapped in a different Shimano on the front. I actually think it improves the looks.
I've included a shot of the original stem and handlebar, just to be complete.

Vonruden,
I tell 'ya man, you have to be the luckiest cat on the East Coast or your wallet rolls over for every fine vintage bike that falls at your feet!
Congrats on another amazing score!!! We're going to need a stable photo soon... we need to judge the level of addiction.
Thanks for sharing my good brother!
Cheers,
-D-
p.s. I know this is a MTN thread but how about a bonus posting of your Zunow for all to appreciate? Thanks!

Ugh, that's sad. I live in a college town where vintage MTBs and road bikes are everywhere, and I often see them abused, neglected, and/or abandoned. I like that I live in a cycling town, but under-appreciated old bikes is a sad and ironic side effect of that.

I was prepping a few of my bikes to take to a show today, but got rained out.

Bummer the show got rained out...I would imagine those three beauties would have been a hit a hit with the crowd.
Wish you didn't have so much into that Champion...I'll never be able to afford to get it out from under you, lol.

ECS,
You have your part of the world to yourself.
Just find me the right Series 1/2/3 Breezer, Koski, Cunningham, or possibly a Potts.
We will work a deal

i like how two of those forks don't have a ton of clearance (yet still can fit fat tires).. that's one thing i notice about road bikes is the fork clearance is a lot closer and it looks cleaner

The front two bikes both have 2.125 tires mounted. The Moots was designed so it could take either 26" 27" or 700C rims. Thus the tall crown clearance and the adjustable brake mounts. Kent was into, one bike to do it all.

It's been a long time since I've posted this one and I've since changed it quite a bit, so here's the old Sbike again. Formerly an Urban Assault bike, now back in proper off-road guise.
I'm pretty confident that those sidewalls won't stay this clean for long.
