$300 for sunglasses? Wow...must be nice to be rich.

I wear polarized bifocal sunglasses from Walmart. Set me back 10 bucks or so.

I would agree.

But then I pay decent money for quality stuff except the last pair I acquired. I was given a pair of RayBans after I lost mine visiting a friend. $100 is my threshold.

Regarding cataracts, both my parents (in their 80's) have had them, does this bode poorly for me and my eyes? Who is to say, neither of my parents were as fussy about making sure they had quality sun wear, they both smoked (though quit early) but live moderate lives and eat well.

That said, they're your eyes and the only pair you have take good care of them.

That's great but the oakleys are still a ripoff. I pay 1/10th or 1/15th of the price for comparable or even superior value.

There is no such thing as high end plastic.

A plastic frame is a plastic frame. Just be sure to get polycarb lenses for 100% UV A/B protection. They WILL protect against cataracts and macular degeneration. Large lenses with full wraparound protection are ideal.

1. UV exposure is a risk factor for cataracts and macular degeneration.
2. Cataracts are the result of the natural aging process of the lens in the eye. It's inevitable you'll get one, what's not is whether it will be visually significant before you die.

Cataracts are not inevitable. Get your facts straight.

lol, I've been a Ophthalmologist for 25 years. If I look at 100 90 year olds, they all either have cataracts or have had them removed. I didn't say they all get visually significant cataracts that need surgery. Cataracts are any opacity in the lens, so it's a judgement call when they are minimal.

I purchased a set of Rudy Project Rydon frames. I chose them because they have a low profile prescription insert. This allows me to have different primary lenses without the need of having each set with my prescription.

Yes, expensive at first, but once you once the frames the rest is very reasonable.

Ok, how about this:
The vast majority get cataracts within their lifetime. The only way to not get them is to die.

Wrong again, bucko. It's 50% of people over the age of 80 in the U.S.

I have two pairs of sunglasses with prescription inserts. Well under $50 apiece. They are AMAZING sunglasses.

Call me crazy, but I'll go with the guy who has 4 years of medical school, an internship, residency, and 20+ years of professional experience on this one.

MD's are not infallible. As a matter of fact, up to 440,000 people die every year due to doctor error. MD's are the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S.

The bad thing is most cataracts that are removed probably didn't need to be. We generally only operate when it affects someone's activities of daily living, with glasses, with both eyes together. It's amazing how many people are perfectly happy with 20/70-80 vision, we won't push surgery on them unless they still want to drive or the cataract blocks our view of other problems in the eye. You never know who's going to be the 1/5000 that ends up with a bad infection (do you want to argue that statistic too?)
On the other hand, even a small PSC cataract can cause devastating symptoms, even though their vision may still measure 20/25 or so.

Still waiting for your citation showing that the "vast majority" of people get cataracts and that "the only way to not get them is to die."
