Relatively new to Strava, got my first KOM this morning!
Started doing Strava a few rides ago, and gotta say I'm digging the segment stuff. Really changes a normal ride into something more trying to improve my times over various segments. Today I got my first KOM, and I'm pretty excited about it
I can't figure out how to share the leaderboard on a segment, but it's the "Pine Forest Rd Hill Climb South Bound" in Ensley, FL segment. Anyways, I know it's probably no big deal, but just thought I'd share my small little accomplishment (by the way, I totally think it's my new Emonda that helped!!!).

I had read up as I'm ignorant to Strava though lots of folks I know are using it. I dunno why, I just haven't. (I do have my Garmin 305 and track myself that way).
Congrats!!
Maybe I should try it.

Congrats! It really is a good motivator.
I use MapMyRide and it has a similar feature in which you can create courses from along routes you've take or you can compete against other user-made courses.
I was so ready to jump up the leader board yesterday on a particular course over a route that I frequent, but then noticed I had a flat :-( So it will have to wait another day or two, but I'm looking forward to trying to own that particular course!

Congrats! I have to confess that Strava has been part of the motivation behind me wanting to get a road bike. I believe I placed 29[SUP]th[/SUP] out of 160+ riders on a segment last weekend – which I’m sure sounds insignificant, but I’ve only been riding for a little over 3 months and I’m riding my 2006 Cannondale F300 mountain bike currently. Plus I weighed 270lbs a few years ago and I’m still about 15 or so pounds overweight (down about 95lbs now).
I like seeing those Personal Record Awards on Strava. I use Map My Ride as well. I find a lot of motivation from using these apps too. I’m anxious to see if I get a road bike how much my times will improve.

Having fewer than 30 riders on a segment doesn't hurt things either... seems like all the segments near me have 1,000 or more.
I like Strava - it's a great way for me to see how I did against yesterday's version of me. It's got some neat tools and it's interesting to see how my friends are doing.
I go for rides with my wife and she's all fired up to get QOMs. She got an 8th place overall in some segment we did Sunday that we were just tooling along. I think I was in zone 1 the whole time, didn't even know it was a segment. There just aren't as many women using strava I guess.

LOL, no. I'm originally from the foothills of NC and have done the Mt Mitchell (highest peak east of the Mississippi) ride a couple of times, so I have a good idea of what constitutes a climb. There's a couple of bridges around here that offer an ok gradient, but that's about it.

I got a 9th ( now 10) somewhere and coasted a bit near the end.. it involves a few traffic lights on an upslope.. so it's a tricky one to get right.

I'm sure there are plenty of female riders out there that could out-ride me any day of the week, and more power to them! I got respect for anyone who's faster than me, regardless of gender.
On another note, your math needs work.

I don't get Strava segments, they are parsed so fine that it's always giving you little trophies 100-foot stretches you didn't know you were riding. I pretty much ignore that part of it.

uh... that would be stravawatts....... not real watts. You guys ever notice that the guys with power meters on their bikes have much lower wattages shown than the estimated watts that strava calculates? It makes no sense how they come up with such high wattage figures.
