Aksium wheels....good buy?
Is $100 + $40 shipping a good deal for a set of Mavic Aksium wheels with campy compatible freehub body, in good condition though a few years old?
I am building a road bike up for my daughter and have a Campy Veloce groupset with little mileage that I picked up for 40euro (am currently living in Belgium) from someone who pulled it off their bike to upgrade to chorus.
Just wondering what the impression of these wheels are and if $140 total is good value or not.
Thanks,
-j

Not that good of a deal, for a similar amount you could get New Fulcrum 7's from Ribble, which have warranty, and no issues with tax/import duty, Guessing as the price given, the wheels are in the US, if shipping into Belgium, you could get hit with VAT/Duty charges on top of the price paid, buying with in the UK, you don't have to worry about this, as it is paid at source.

Wheels are in France...so no VAT/Duty shipping into Belgium. Good points on the warranty issue and similar amount for new Fulcrum wheels.
Thanks.

One of my bikes came with Aksium wheels. They are fine but heavy. New they can be found in the sub $300 price range so half that isn't bad but if used not a steal.

And I'm gonna give a vote of confidence for a couple reasons......
1.) They are durable wheels. I'm 6'2" 195lbs and hit a rock a couple days ago the size of my fist. I blew out tube *AND* tire and yet the rim is fine. Still true & spokes are still perfect. That's a NICE thing that a carbon or lighter alloy rim might not have handled well.
2.) They are not that heavy. I always hear how heavy they are, yet my EVO is 17lbs and as I was dealing with replacement tire & tube yesterday the wheels are still laughably light to me. (Especially compared to stockers on lower end roadies)
I'm not savy on Fulcrum 7's so they might be great too, but I can certainly vouch for Aksiums being a great wheel & $100 is a great price, imho.

Newer Aksiums are in the 1700g range which is not a bad weight for wheels in that price range (older ones are considerably heavier.) Problem with buying "several year old" wheels is that you don't know how many miles are on them. They could have 20k miles on them for all you know in which case they're not worth much IMO.

I have them on my road bike. Steel spokes will rust in salty environment.

Sure, shoot me a PM and let's hit it sometime. I ride Turner and Schaffer up to the golf course sometimes, but I'm garbage as a climber.

I see aksium wheels on CL all the time in the $100-200 range. so, it's a decent deal.
Mine were heavy... 2050grams for the set. (2009)

I have them on my new road bike, no complaints. They are light enough for me but I am newbie and dont race so what do I know, total bike weight at 19lbs. Only thing I notice is that they are loud
