Classic Equipment - Silca Pumps - On the Retrogrouch Blog

Hi Folks,

I just put up a new post on classic Silca Pumps on The Retrogrouch Blog

The Retrogrouch: Classic Equipment: Silca Pumps

People love these things, so I've got bit of a story, and some history on the things.

check it out if you get a chance,

KB

Nice article!

I buy the Campagnolo heads whenever I find them, so now I have several Silca frame pumps and heads that I can swap around to fit whatever bike.

I recently bought my first Silca floor pump, and like it a lot. The new ones come with a weird reversible thread-on chuck that seems rather slow to use. I wish I had the simple brass press-on chuck.

I purchased my Silca Pista brand new in 2003 and it looks as good as new. Inflation takes a little while to fully inflate a mtb tire even though it's a slick, 37-559, and I still possess the brass head for presta valves that threads into the schrader head located at the end of the hose. All in brand new condition though I'm a bit concerned about the future availability of replacement parts.

I still have and use my Silca floor pump regularly. I bought it in the early 80's, it still has the 10 Speed Drive Import sticker on it, what a great pump!

Again, nice article.

I have Silcas with Campy heads on three of my bicycles.

So tough to beat.

As for floor pumps, I still have a Silca floor pump up at the cabin.

I've been keeping an eye out for another as I wore out my Specialized and Park pumps.

I finally broke down and bought a Lezyne two years ago.

Best pump since the Silca.

Great article.

I still use a white Silca Impero frame pump with Campy head, on my Raleigh Team Replica and Litespeed Classic. I also use a Silca floor pump at home. Old habits never die .

Nice article thanks! Brings back memories for sure. Still have my Silca Floor pump, still going strong after decades of use. Also have the original frame pump that came with my '80 Bianchi.

Nice blog entry, KB. But you need a pic of the old flat head.

You can use that pic if you like. But I have better examples if you'd like.

Current pics of of my '74 Internat'l w/ the Silca Imperio that was OEM in the shipping carton and the "frame fit" for my '77 Trek.
Both are in service along w/ the 70's Pista pump in the garage, good designs that have well stood the test of time & use.
Loaned the use of one recently to a stranded rider who had released CO2 into the county's atmosphere without effecting a repair.

Great blog OP, thanks for posting. I have a Silca purchased new only about 6 years ago, it's the only floor pump I use regularly and I love it. It had a sticky one-way base valve a few years back and all it took was a quick spritz of WD 40 to free it up. I used motor oil to lube the plunger at the same time, seems to work great.

Slightly different note; I just bought one of the Topeak Classic 2000 pumps...weighs about 20 lbs and is an incredibly over-built beauty...anyone know the full story behind this very limited edition? Not much info googlable on that.
