I usually overtighten my quick releases because i hate the creaking noises they make. I was really shocked the rear was loose. Back to using shimano quick releases!

Money, food wrapper, roadside trash, striped maple leaf... there's always something around that can work as a tire boot.

Haven't had a gash in a few years, guess I've just been complacent about it =\

I carry a section of an older tire at nearly full width, and about 3" long

I rode home two miles on a flat one time after getting a gash in my tire because I was so pissed off. Wheel was fine and I didn't crash thankfully.

Seven miles for me once. The boot didn't hold and I only had one cartridge. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump.

Did an organized century yesterday, my first time ever doing 100mi , in southern MA and RI. I did it basically solo, just about 18mph avg, except for a few miles that I was able to latch onto a group and draft. I actually did 106 miles because I saw some guys take a wrong turn and only realized it was wrong when I saw that I had crossed into my hometown (which I knew wasn't part of the route). Once I hit 100, it was tough to get through the other 6, though, it was clear that I was running out of fuel. But overall it was great, fantastic weather, some nice ocean views, and definitely an accomplishment for someone who a year ago was just starting with 4 mile rides. I then fell asleep at 8 and got a solid 10hrs of sleep lol

I'm a coward about this mainly because 1) I did it once and went down while turning. 2) I don't want to ruin my wheels.

I've done 10 crits on a wrapper. Still training on the same wrapper. I had to double it up though.

Mylar is a modern marvel.

I have the bag from one of these rubber-banded with my spare tube.

They always start off full, if that helps. They go faster than a pinch flat in my hands.

2 rides today.

Morning ride, relatively easy pace (about 86% for the first half hour), so I went off the front and put in a good 7 minutes Z5. 3 guys came up and we worked together but the field caught us just before the final kicker before the first sprint and I had nothing left. Rode easy to the KOM hill, a 5 or 6 minute climb. Got a good solid interval there as well, hung on to the leaders but couldn't match the surge a minute from the top and finished a few seconds back. Solid yet short workout.

Alviso noon "crit". This one is nice because it's treated as a race by most guys there (although a few are also just trying to hang on). Felt fresh. Took a solo flier for a lap, got caught, then followed Dan Martin's attack (national road champ). Damn, that guy's attacks are fast. I took one pull and then just hung on for dear life until the field caught us. Rested a few minutes, and a cat 5 and I followed an Alto Velo guy. We dropped him in a lap, but steadily built a solid gap. 3 laps to go a chase group of 4 was barely in sight behind us, and the field nowhere to be seen. 2 laps to go we were caught. I guess we were getting too close and someone finally got the field to work hard. Daaaaamn. I kept working to keep the pace up til 1/2 to go when a leadout train came by. Couldn't get on it and ended up 7 or 8 spots back. Dan Martin sprinted for the win. 37 minutes at 100%, another solid workout.

I don't remember loosening my rear wheel in quite some time so I dunno how it got loose.
I had a similar experience recently. On my last ride any time I'd try to jump to accelerate and chase I'd get some unusual wheel rub. I'm a stickler for checking my bike before rides and always check the wheels, but somehow the rear wheel quick release had loosened a bit to the point where the rear was moving. Glad I did a quick check mid ride and resolved the issue.

Tuesday Night Worlds. Got a massive asthma attack on the top of the hill, enough to start seeing white spots. I recovered on the descent (which I don't go over 20+ because my bike would explode) but considered just pulling off to the side and resting for a bit.

Haven't had an excuse worthy attack in months, still have the post attack shakes.
