Cinellli Stem questions.

I believe the new version of the 1A does indeed have a limit line. Not sure when they started putting limit lines on them but I have a NOS one here, from the mid 80's or so, with a limit line. All of them had them from a certain point on, I believe. And that point was a long time ago.
Although, looking at these pics, it's hard to tell…

Designed for a 26.0 mm bar.
Decades ago, the minimum length was 70mm then 80mm and increments of 5 mm thereafter to 140 mm max. Designed for a 26.4 mm bar. The middle later 80's production brought 26.0 mm, you will need to be careful with bar capacity when looking at an old stock stem that had a minimum insertion line and or the length cast into the quill, not stamped. Test, don't guess.
Old stock stems are no worry to me. Given that comment, I did find ONE that I had to retire with a casting flaw that appeared along the extension, it was an early unit, before they anodized them and had the early bolt and nut binding for the bar with a 7 mm allen bolt for the quill. I was sad.

I think he wants to know the height of the stem from the minimum insertion line, not the length of the stem or whether or not there's a minimum insertion line.

I don't know the exact minimum insertion length, but Cinelli's don't give you much leeway on the height. I mount mine as high as possible and they still sit fairly low.

rootboy - I KNOW! "Anyone know the amount quill between the min insertion line and the center line (or top) of the extension?" himespau was correct. I would think that you could measure the distance by using calipers.
Did the distance between the end of the quill to the top of the extension change over time or was it dependent on the extension length?
What is nebulous to me is if there isn't a min line, where should it be as measured from the bottom of the quill?

On the 1R or X or whatever it is that I have, the distance is around 2 inches or so if memory serves. I have a couple of different Cinelli stems and they're all very similar and all pretty short. I like their looks, but they don't give you much for height.

Since other questions have arisen in this thread, I have a 1A stem. It's only stamped (on the back) with Cinelli at or slightly below what I would think is the minimum insertion (sounds like bike porn to me ) line. Would this date the stem, or are the re-issues the same? Also, I measured the bore (bar) at 26.37mm, but didn't check to see if the clamping bolt was snugged or not. I'll guess that it's a 26.4 stem.

Thank you all for the responses (correct or not...), I see I left out an 'of' between 'amount' and 'quill' so maybe that was the nebulosity... himespau is correct, and since I don't have a 1A in my hand of any vintage and I never really fondled them in the raw (more bike porn inference) my knowledge is lacking.
wineslob, could you do me a favor and measure the distance between the top of the quill and where you think the minimum insertion line is as well as the total length top to bottom?

My curiosity is up too. I have several 1A's in the box and will check out the dimensions for variations.
The Pinarello came with an XA which really looks good to me. My preference was for 1A's but now......

That would be fine, any help is appreciated.
I like the XA/XE design as well but read some negative reports on the XA which were apparently sorted with the XE. Finding either in the size I want and at a reasonable price seems elusive, so thought I'd stick to the 1A since they are currently in production and around $50 new.

Ok, my 1A is 136 MM from the top of the bolt hole to the bottom of the casting.
It's also stamped "minimum insertion" just above the Cinelli stamp. From the bolt hole to the top of those letters it's approx 82 MM.
I re-checked the handlebar bore, it's 26.26 MM. So a 26 MM bar?

Yep, they're for 26mm bars that additional .26mm accounts for the slack in the clamp area when loose ;-)

Don't know about flex but they twist around in the fork for me. I just cannot use them because the collet style bottom just doesn't stay put for my admittedly crooked posture. Only one I had I wound up sawing and filing the bottom at an angle and putting a wedge tightener and bolt from some Sakae Royal or something on it.
I mean I had a back pocketed Cinelli logo T-shirt too so I couldn't just throw it away.
