Recommend a comfortable cx style bike....

I am 56, 240 lbs and am looking for a comfortable bike capable of longer distance riding with a combination of asphalt and gravel. This will be a fitness bike with the idea of loosing some weight. Hoping for a bike that is a pleasure to ride with the capacity of running bigger tires for gravel rides.

I'll recommend you find a Local Bike Shop that treats you well and buy whatever brand they have that fits you. Ride a number. A comfort disc road bike that will fit 28 tires may be all you need for gravel and dirt, 32's might be better on some surfaces. CX bikes tend to cost more than road bikes for the same grade components...... YMMV

Salsa warbird or niner rlt

Keep in mind most CX bikes are race bikes and bit more nimble and aggressive fit.

Not sure what your budget is, but the Trek Domane disc series can clear 30mm tires for gravel and dirt road zooming.
Endurance geometry so it's a bit more laid back than a full-on race bike, and the frame/fork have some tech to help reduce road vibration transfer to the rider.

For a lower budget, I started out riding longer distances on a stock Surly Cross-Check which I outfitted with some fenders and 32mm street tires. It's super comfy, even if it is a bit of a tank compared to other bikes.

Finding a bike shop you like is probably your best bet. They'll be familiar with the kind of gravel rides you want to do. Tire size matters since you want to do gravel riding and I'd pay attention to what the locals are riding. Also you will want a bike that lets you get the bars up reasonably high as you will find that more comfortable.

The surly straggler is sweet and comes stock with 41c tires; I like the Kona rove a lot too.
