Separating old rear derailluer from hanger
Hi,
I'm upgrading a Falcon derailleur to a Shimano Altus, and I'd like to reuse the hanger if I can. It appears to be in good shape, but it's not apparent to me how to separate the derailleur from the hanger.
Thanks in advance,
GaPavedTrailRdr

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

That appears to be a riveted assembly, rather than a threaded on RD system. If so don't bother trying to take them apart because the hanger won't be tapped for a thread on RD (10x1).
BTW- if you haven't yet bought the replacement, look for one with the (claw) hanger included. Otherwise hangers are cheap enough, and can probably be scrounged at a bike shop or co-op for the cost of a beer.

Thanks FBinNY, wish I asked before I bought my Altus RD. My experience shopping for a claw adapter yesterday was that they are only used on bikes <$200, so my area bike shops didn't have them in stock and it cost too little to make an order with a new supplier. I ended up ordering one online.

IF you have a claw type, you're pretty much limited to Shimano Tourney, which comes in that version also.

-Tourney is spec'd correctly for the bikes that have that style of derailer- 7 speeds or less on the rear. Or an old used derailer is dirt cheap.
-It's rarely economical for a shop to work on a bike of that style. If you add up the price of labor plus a derailer plus whatever other parts (a chain, rear wheel, whatever else may have been damaged when the rear derailer failed) you may as well just buy a new cheap bike.
