Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommendations for Co2 inflator?

I see there are various frame pumps but I'd like to avoid the frame clutter. What's a good Co2 inflator? Something that might never get used but you're confident is going to work after sitting in the seat bag for a long time? Also that isn't a PITA to get to seat on the valves. Schrader valves on mine.

Running 700 x 35 tires.

Thanks.

I use this one:

Ultraflate CO2 Inflator on Sale with 120% Low Price Guarantee

(this is just a random URL to show the product)

It'll use unthreaded 12 gram cartridges, which are the cheapest IME. Mine has lasted 8+ years, so far, and I've repaired many flats on the trail.

FYI, 12gm cartridges at WallyMart are about 55 cents each in a pack of 40.

Genuine Innovations Air Chuck. It weighs 17 grams and is all metal. It won't crack or break and is very easy to use.

Another vote for the Genuine Innovations Air Chuck.

My wife has the Ultraflate which is nice if you don't want to feel the chill of the cartridge.

I can't say in good conscience that Silca's Eolo inflator is a top pick.
Sure, it got a nice review - but, in my experience it's finicky to use.
Over-engineered doesn't always mean better.

If I had it to do all over, I'd save my $ and try Topeak instead.

I've got a Genuine Innovations UltraFlate on one bike and a ProFlate on the other. Both work equally well, but the ProFlate (or whichever one has the retractable cover over the nozzle) does a little better at keeping the nozzle clean if mounting it on the bike; if carrying it in a seat bag or jersey pocket it really doesn't much matter.

I carry the Lezyne Trigger Drive too, works great and is also all metal.

I'm sure others can comment about this more but if you're running 35mm tires, you'll need bigger cartridges or more than one, but I'm by no means an expert.

I appreciate all the great input. I ordered a Shiny Object. I like the simple design and the valve that lets you control when you start dispensing gas when you've got it seated to your satisfaction. The couple of videos I've watched make it seem pretty straightforward to use.

Also ordered 12 16g cartridges. I figure I'll have to sacrifice a couple of them to test it. With these Marathon Plus tires I may never need to use the other 10 but will keep the inflator, levers, a couple of cartridges and a spare tube in the seat bag just in case.

I've used the shiny object and the Air Chuck. The shiny object is the best by far. I've had two (of the three I own) air chucks have o rings fail on me. Plus the Shiny object is super easy to control air flow - especially nice to be able to add just that wee bit when putting the tube in the tire on the side of the road to avoid a twist or pinch. That was not easy on the air chuck.

The seal is excellent. I usually stick a partial cartridge back in the bag, in case the patch doesn't hold. I later went back and found that the CO2 cartridge still had air 3 weeks later. I wouldn't always count on it, but it will certainly keep a half-full cartridge alive until the end of a ride. I use it like someone mentioned, a small burst to seat the tire, inspect the wheel for pinches, then fully inflate.

MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THE VALVE IS CLOSED BEFORE TWISTING THE CARTRIDGE! You can pretty much guess how I discovered that....

I carry CO2 and a pump. What does that make me--a realist?

But as far as which inflator, I've been using the Genuine Innovations Air Chuck for years with great results. I just picked up a Lezyne Twin Speed Drive that looks nice. Simple and similar to the GI Air Chuck. I really like Lezyne products!

Same here. Yes, as others point out more weight but then I can use the pump to check the old tire for leaks and partially pump the new one to make sure it's seated before using the CO2 to get it up to proper pressure.
