Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? That's pretty awesome, I wonder if it's double printed on the opposite side. It'd be a shame if not.

I think it is, you can kind of see the mirrored print on the other wheel, they are mirrored so they have the same silhouette. Could be wrong tho...

Nothing 'jackass' about it at all. It's a stayer bike. Google it.

Sweet.
One of the most exotic (and dangerous) forms of bicycle racing would have to be stayer racing. Contested on the velodromes of Europe, riders are on a special extra stable, big geared, high set bicycle and paced behind a large motorcycle and its driver. Speeds in this bizarre field of racing are high, as fast as the motorcycle is traveling, and coordination with the driver is critical.

Eddie Merckx was in a stayer accident in which he was injured and his stayer was killed.

Is it just me, or does this read as a Chuck Norris invincibility meme?

They still do something very similar here in Belgium, it's called "Derny racing".

"Derny" is the name of those mopeds they use...

Different type of competition too. There is only one derny. It gets progressively faster with each lap. You're not allowed to pass the derny until it pulls off for the final sprint. Great competition.

Not exactly on topic but the one time (so far) I've visited the SD velodrome, there was a rider getting motorpaced, and they were going fast, real fast. I started talking with a dude finishing up his training session, and came to find that the guy on the motorbike was none other than Eddie B., whose book Bicycle Road Racing had been my bible twenty years earlier. Not in my wildest imagination he would have wound up coaching track in SD, hope he's doing well.
