I have found a route, 9 miles with 6 light-free miles, but there are still stop signs and cross traffic.

I was going to say that when the red light is on she's available... :-)
We've had a few posts on local blogs about this lately. Especially irritating is sitting at a red light when there is zero cross traffic. Vastly different than Europe with mostly roundabouts or sharks teeth and not nearly as many red lights and almost no stop signs.

My commute is 3.2 miles with ZERO stop lights. There are a couple of stop signs that I turn right on so they don't really count, and then I merge from MUP to street at just the right spot to avoid one traffic light. Got a MUP bridge over the busiest street. My commute times are always the same.

commuter and barbarian
I can ride up to 31 miles on my commute with 1 stop light. It is ridiculously long, so I keep an eye on it as I approach and if I see it turn green to early for me to get to it, then I turn left a block early, cut through a grocery store parking lot, come out on the cross street that is still green and turn left back onto my street. I often wonder what the drivers who passed me just prior to having to stop for the light think when they see me get back on the street ahead of them and cruise along as they still sit waiting. By the time I turn into my workplace, 3 blocks later, they still haven't caught back up with me.
I don't know if the experience has inspired any of them to ditch their car for a bike.
