Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lizard Skins bar tape

I need new bar tape. I've used Lizard Skins for the past four years and have no complaints. But before I buy, is there anything new I should consider? I like the padding plus sure grip with Lizard Skins, especially in hot weather with sweating.

I used LizardSkins DSP a few years back, great tape, till it got any damage, very expensive as well.

Currently mainly use ProLogo Plaintouch or Skintouch, as they are about half the price, and do the job just as well, plenty of other brands out there, ODI has bought some tape out recently, I might have a look at that next time I need some ODI High Performance Road Bar Tape review | road.cc

i use the 2.5mm Lizard Skin, it lasts about a season or so for me, but i don't wear gloves so i don't mind replacing it more often than i would like because it's the most comfortable bar tape i've tried with bare hands. don't waste your time with the white though, it turns off-white after a handful of rides and will never go back to the original white. if you want white, definitely go Fizik Microtex...

Specialized Roubaix tape is really nice. Different from anything else I've used before, and I love it.

I obviously don't ride enough. I have had the 2.5 DSP on my bike for two calendar years and it still looks great.

Yeah, I don't have durability problems with my DSP2.5 either, and one of my bikes is also on its second season...with 2nd hand blue tape! I used it briefly on another bike before deciding the mismatched blue hie with the paint was too irritating.

Anyway, I'm interested to learn more about Fizik Microtex, as white is my preferred tape color, and yes, my DSP white does get a little dingy, especially since my main gloves are black-palmed Giros that bleed some color when wet or sweaty.

LizardSkins told me to clean DSP w/ rubbing alcohol regularly, and warm soapy when really dirty, but neither really return it to bright white, and some browning/yellowing is always evident.

If Fizik Microtex could match the feel and grip of Lizardskins, bit deliver a more durable, white, White, I'd be interested to give it a whirl.

Lizard Skins . It took me awhile to get used to the "stickiness" and the price...But I have a set I have re wrapped many times and they still look great.

I have Cinelli Cork on my old rust bucket, it feels OK, works OK, but recently saw some Frzik that felt so darn good. Was ready to put new tape on my ride, until I saw $35.00 price tage, and almost went into ventricular fibrilation.

My vote goes to this one too. Not sticky, but feels firm in a way. Don't think it doesn't have good cushioning though, it's just much more durable.

I paid $24 for my Lizard Skin tape. There is cheaper tape out there but I think I may get three full years out of my roll. $8 per year isn't to bad if you ask me.

That said, one inexpensive tape that I've heard great reviews on is the Nashbar tape Nashbar Handlebar Tape

The downside to Microtex is that it lasts forever.
You better like the color you pick... You'll be with it forever.

For the record, the mid-weight Lizard Skins DSP tape is my go to. The lighter, thinner version is horrible with little to no plush. I haven't tried the thickest one, but don't plan on it.

Lizard Skin 2.5 DSP is my favorite. The thicker stuff is to thick. I just tried some Arundel and was totally let down. The worst tape ever. I have to go with an absolute train wreck of a wrap job at least until I feel I got a little use out of it. I have some Fizik, not sure what type exactly but it got good reviews and only slightly cheaper than Lizard Skin.

I use the DSP 3.2 (big hands). So far I really like it.

I have some LS 2.5 on mine, it doesn't seem to wear that well but I do like the feel. It's interesting I have most wear on the left by the hood. I mainly use the front/left brake so maybe that's why. I was having trouble with it slipping when in the drops (that is, it slips below the hoods). Ended up putting on a layer of "sport tape" first, and that fixed it. I think my bars (drops) were angled too far down too so I would tend to pull down on the tape. Recently I rotated them up a little (meaning, raising the bar end) so that might make a difference (I have never liked my drops perfectly horizontal).

Lizard skins ain't cheap though.

I'm interested in lizard skins as well, there is a pic of a really dark blue color on their website but different to the standard blue for sale, anyone got any idea about the darker blue or an alternative brand in this colour?

The Supacaz Super Sticky Kush tape is the best tape I've ever used hands down.

It is hard to beat the fancy (pronounced pricey) handlebar tapes. They often have attributes (grip, lightweight, thinnest) that you don't get in the old fashioned cork tape. But the old thick, cushy, cork tape feels great in my old large hands. And I can buy it as cheap as $2.50 direct from China to my mailbox.

Maybe not a new product... but a somewhat new idea for using an old time-tested product... that might be worth trying... again.
