Recently, there's been this guy that shouts "*******!" at me every time he sees me (I must have done something to piss him off, though I've thought back and can't come up with anything). We were always traveling in opposite directions, so I wondered what he would do if we were traveling in the same direction.
On my last ride, he passed me with plenty of room, shouting "*******!" as usual. I feel better. He obviously feels the need to verbally assault me, but not physically. I can deal with that.

Well, I agree with the title, but I avoid posting it, lest the abusive drivers will get the word and think: I see, words can't scare you, so I'll throw a cigarette butt at you next time!

Think of yourself as doing a daily good deed., He obviously has some unvented frustrations, and shouting at you daily lowers his stress level. It's therapeutic for him and costs you nothing, so it's a win/win. Also consider what might happen if he didn't have you around.

Perhaps a sporty chapeau would appease his demands. Depending on your station, a bowler or homberg, although those should accompany a Pashley. I usually don an Aussie boonie hat for neighborhood jaunts, although for longer rides in traffic on windy days I'm considering adding wings and silver streamers braided into dreadlocks to my helmet.
BTW, when I was a kid a local fisherman would call out "Hey! Your wheels are turning!" whenever I passed. Being prone to abstract thinking it took awhile for me to realize he literally meant my wheels were turning.

I'm not a real "aww, just ignore it" kind of guy. Abuse is abuse, whether it's verbal or physical. The way I dealt with bullies as a kid was to beat 'em like a circus monkey. Same applies to road bullies. I'd keep a couple of ball bearings or ninja rocks handy. Both offer plausible deniability.
