Mine have been below 0 F. several times in two years use, and below 0 C. most all of two winters. No breakage, but hard to use wearing mittens or lobster gloves!

Something like a carbineer closure would we welcome actually.

Nice idea about the caribiner. I think a person could sew loops near where the buckle webbing is sewn together. Then you have buckles or caribiner loops.
Velcro? Don't think so.
maybe a simple tie closure.
key ring on 1 side, snap hook on the other

Or use 2 key rings , they can work like a buckle, & you can feed the 2 0f them into the sewn Loop.

Functionally D rings once they are in place.

I've had the latches of bike computer brackets snap off in winter, which I've put down to the cold making the plastic brittle, so yeah...
Age is a factor too I believe. Not yours, idiot

I looked at it again & it's just like you say--male half of buckle is not sewn in. There is the little clasp (rectangular with a gap on one side) which takes a bit of force to extract from the sewn strap loop but after that it's easy to remove the broken piece. Thanks very much, saves a lot of hassle!

Other ideas about caribiners/key rings etc are pretty creative too. Looking at the Ortlieb buckle, the prong pieces are really thin where they flex, not a robust design. Actually, I broke 2 or 3 of the buckles--after first one broke I thought it was a fluke to I tried others & they promptly broke! So as some have noted it must have been a bad batch of plastic.

It's hard to beat the strap and two D rings, they are not as fast as the snap buckles though.

Yes, they could be sturdier- That's for sure. Ortlieb twice sent me new buckles free of charge after i suggested that I thought they should. The picture i actually sent to Ortlieb so they would know what happened. But it was such a hassle, i decided to buy a quantity in bulk. So, i ended up buying 10 1" Duraflex Stealth buckle off Amazon for like $11. They are the exact buckle to fit the female part. I don't have a lot of confidence they won't break again but now I have a nine of them left over so I am prepared.

This one? https://www.amazon.com/10-Duraflex-St.../dp/B003SZO23A

NB they keep changing so, not all 1" buckles are interchangeable unless you use both parts
Yes, even from the same company.
