Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i've had a kinesis aluminum fork on my custom titanium bike for about 20 years now. it still works. but it's the only bike that has a fork that occasionally shudders when braking. a particular combination of speed and braking force on the caliper will cause it every time. whether or not it has anything to do with the fork's material will probably never be known to me. OTOH i've got carbon or steel fork on rest of my bikes and have never had any problem with any of them.

i'd go with carbon.

Why would you go alloy over carbon when salt and water has no effect on carbon? Carbon is better for winter riding IMO than any steel, aluminum, titanium etc.

If you go/went carbon, just make sure you don't opt for this Kinesis version.. which was supposed to have been recalled.
Cyclist died after carbon forks separated, Coroner rules - Cycling Weekly

EDIT: Realizing from this article that these were forks generally made before 2009, so you probably have no worries; Interesting though that they've only received so far about 10% of affected forks returned so far. I think saying you ride all year round is nothing to base fork selection on. What about handling and appropriate offset? What about features like fender mounts? Clearance for tire size? Length; does it need long reach calipers?

Those are the kinds of questions you should be asking.

That kinesis fork is quite expensive. You can get a full carbon fork for that much.

Why do we not have the technology to lock threads after a certain amount of time has passed... Seriously?

My bad, I had seen the Kinesis fork recall article and thought to search this site to see if this had been discussed. Found this thread.
However, that said, the recall is current news, and pertains to Kinesis forks, so you could say that I am being considerate in not starting a new thread when one already exists.

I have the current Kinesis fork, the full carbon Tracer 1.5, and was initially surprised by how comfortable that thing is; I swear it seems the hub will deflect rearward over sufficiently rough stuff. It's very smooth, anyway, and is brilliant in the dirt road application I often use it in.
