Cycling in the 30s in the 80s.
Have not posted much lately but today I took a late season ride of 18 miles and when I started out the temps were in the high 30s. I am struggling to at least log 2000 miles for 2016 and have 73 miles to go to make that goal. We'll see.
There is something appealing about a moody, gloomy day along the ocean in December. Had 4 thin layers, tights, and my insulated Pearl Izumi jacket. Only my hands were cold, so I guess I need to solve that problem. In any case, words cannot express how pleased I am to still be able to enjoy getting out on my bike, knowing that next month I will turn 82.
Fighting till the last to avoid taking the bike into the basement and putting it on the trainer. At least I will have my iPad on the handlebar and the Youtube videos of cycling in different countries. Got me through last year so it should do the same for this one.

Congratulations on riding at 82. If I'm alive and physically and mentally capable at that age, I hope I'll be riding then too.
It's all about having the right gear. I'm outfitted to be comfortable down to 10 °F, and there are those here who ride at even colder temperatures.
Keeping your core warm is seldom the problem. It's the extremities that require your attention. A good pair of gloves is essential - better yet, mittens or, what I prefer, "lobster claws". Also, buy the gloves on the big side and wear thin glove liners - they help a lot. Feet also require some gear, particularly for longer rides.
I use my trainer when I must. I hate it.

As others have expressed, I hope when I turn 82 (30 years to go), I still have the ability get get on the bike and enjoy the ride.

Next year (Jan) my goal is to not ride the trainer.
To OP, happy pre birthday. That's great news and inspiration. The fact you have the desire to hop on a trainer at any age is a feat I aspire to.
Like you, I wanna live forever, so far so good.

@Sculptor7, good job gittin' er done! I've found that consistency is king for riding. But set realistic expectations. Mine are less than 20F or roads not clear (snow), then I take the train (for commuting to work). Check out the winter riding threads here to get some clothing and layering ideas. With the right clothing, you should be able to stay out and be comfy in cold temps. Since your location says New England, then you probably get more snow than I do in the NYC area. Maybe supplement with some other activity when there is snow? I remember going cross country skiing in the surrounding cornfields when I was young and living with mom in upstate New York. Nice times they were...

I rode to work in the high 30's (F) yesterday (well, my Garmin read 37 for the low temp) and I thought that was way cold enough! Here in SoCal that doesn't happen very often unless I'm at elevation . . . and this was sea level or pretty much.
So its very excellent that the OP got out in that weather and kudos for still being so active at your age!

Nice going. That's inspiration. As soon as I kick this head cold, I'm heading out. It's been a few years since I've taken a cold ride, now it's time. Thanks.

Secrets to pass on...
Guess one of the most important things is not letting age diminish your sense of entitlement to the exuberance of youth.
Beyond that my mother had a great enthusiasm for life and lived till 97. That probably helps.

I've used Gore-tex ski gloves when riding in cold/snowy conditions. They're too warm when climbing, however.
Good job getting out there!

Riding when the temperatures are in the 30s.....
That's what I've been doing for the last few weeks. It's not bad at all.
But the temperatures here are going down to the teens this coming week. That will take a change of gear.
And an attitude adjustment.
