Fast and light overnighter on the summit of Mt. Orient. Night-time temperature was below 20ºF if you count the windchill at elevation. Cold!

I brought a 15ºF sleeping bag in my 30L backpack, which is also waterproof. It felt like I had nothing on my back, since the sleeping bag weighs less than 3lbs. But, I didn't have to stuff and wrestle it into a small drybag on my handlebars. With cold fingers, that was such a relief.

I will be using the big backpack strategy all winter.

Llama, this brings up the whole issue of cost vs good enough. I've ridden 42/32/22's and now a 44/32/22 and looked briefly into if a 34 mid ring was available, and in the end, the cost of making a small (yet I'm sure a handy diff) change is just not worth it to me. I'd rather put that money into other touring things.

that said, a 44/34/21 would make a really nice riding setup. What cassette do you have on the bike and how many speeds?

It's a 9 speed 11-34.

I think my ideal setup for touring would be a 42/34/22 as my 44t hardly gets used, but of course 110 bcd can't do 42t... If I was to do it again i'd probably go to a mtb crankset instead of 110... but i do like the looks

mtn crank is what I did with the new touring setup this summer, the forementioned 44/32/22 , a regular old shimano one, XT. Looked briefly into some interwebs searches for a 34 for that bcd but didnt find anything right off, and had other priorities. With 26 in wheels especially, a 34 would be nice, and I find the 44 does get used when the bike is used with just two panniers, but yes, with a load, its really only on down hills and tailwinds, but it is there and so handy.

and yes, the aesthetics of that crankset certainly has its merits and visually gives a lovely centered focus to the bike. I also used silver sks fenders that with my black frame, does a nice job like with your green, the silver goes well with a darker colour I find. Don't have a photo with all the bags on yet.

Those last two are definitely an odd couple!

The panniers I ordered from Waxwing Bag Co. arrived last week. They are really nice, and exceptionally well-made. I’m looking forward to taking some short tours next Spring, and Route 66 in 2018.

I had gravel roads in mind but i think i'd have to swap the janky hose clamp & radiator hose combo holding the front rack for p clamps and maybe locktite the rack bolts.

I also have some back roller classics. Was thinking maybe a frame bag but i like the space for my knees and carrying the bike. I need to wire the rear light and get some fenders.

It rides great unloaded or loaded. I wouldn't be surprised if this 'cx' frame could make a quicker road bike than my ken evans.

I get weary with the bikepacking "little bag" situation. The trade-off is worth it for a mountain bike that feels essentially unloaded when the bike paths turn to trail, and trail turns to dry streambed.

You can offset it with some careful packing. Keep the essentials in easy-access spots, the non-essentials tucked away in nooks and crannies. Sometimes I get annoyed with panniers, because I end up having to dump them out to find what i'm looking for. I don't carry enough of anything to keep only one thing in a pannier. It's always half clothes, half food, half tools, half camp gear...

i went for a short tour, 5 days, no panniers, a handle bar roll and a saddle bag. no tent, no sleeping bag, just clothing. normally i would carry clothing and other stuff i need in the handle bar bag, open the deck and its all there, phone, rain jacket, food, cables, camera, anything you want or need. front roll bag is a pain! i don't feel like to open it every time i need something...
