What are your cycling goals for 2016?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As a new rider, find a local club/group to ride with. Hard to do so in Tampa, FL for some reason.

Ride over 6,000 miles in 2016
Lose ~15ish lbs
Increase my average speed of 17/18mph to 19/20mph (flat Florida)
Go on a cycling vacation that involves lots of climbs
Ride the Horrible Hundred and a bunch of other rides in Central Florida - Horrible Hundred 2015
Prepare for La Vuelta Puerto Rico in 2017 - La Vuelta Puerto Rico : Home

Ride into spring with a gazelle inspired cadence, like a Botticelli angel.

Tear into summer mashing and thrashing like a Turner seascape.

Rejoice in the autumn harvest and dance on the pedals like a Bruegel bash.

As always, my sole goal is to have fun in the saddle. This highlight of my fun for the coming year will be my first RAGBRAI.

I plan on riding The Sufferfest's "Tour of Sufferlandia" this year just to keep sane this winter.

I am mountain biking more this year and really going to focus on that, so my actual mileage will be quite a bit less than last year. So, I'm focusing on time spent riding, which my goal will be 350 hours for the year.

I will not buy a new bike this year....

Levi Gran Fondo in October. that is my goal for the year.
And 5000 miles, so far lagging behind with 2300/5000.

My next goal will be to focus on getting strong ... building muscle ... building up my climbing skills and speed in cycling ...

I'd like to ride more than last year. In 2015, I did 3700 km. In 2016, I'd like to do more than that ... somewhere close to 5000 km would be nice.

Last year I said that I would like to climb Mt Wellington. We didn't manage to do that, so I'd like to do it this year.

I'd also like to cycle at least one 200K randonnee. If we could find a decent 300K, I'd like to do one of those as well, but unfortunately they aren't exactly plentiful around here.

We managed one short overnight tour on the last weekend of November 2015, and since we enjoyed that, we'd like to do at least one cycling tour of some length in 2016, maybe two ... or three.

I also walk ... cross-training. Last year I wanted to walk 1000 km and I finished the year with just over 1100 km. In 2016, I'd like to do that again. And actually ... if some of that walking distance could be running, that might be even better! We're doing some preliminary discussion about walking down to the beach, doing a short run there, and walking back some evenings. We're also chatting about acquiring a treadmill ... or rowing machine ... but we're kind of leaning toward the treadmill, I think. A few hikes of a decent length would also be nice. There's one up part of Mt Wellington I'm quite interested in.

We are sort of throwing around ideas of doing a CAM challenge, but I suspect that might be a bit too much pressure. I work full time and take two post-graduate university courses each year now. These courses have turned out to be a whole lot heavier than I had anticipated. My last one had me glued to my desk pretty much every evening and weekend for about 3 months. If I'm going to manage a century each month, I'm going to have to get a whole lot faster!! However, I would like to do several centuries in 2016. More than just two.
OK, let's see here ...

Cycle 5000 km - I don't have my bicycle log right here, but I'm pretty sure I'm halfway to that point.

Climb Mt Wellington - check! And I want to do it again.

Cycle at least one 200K randonnee - check! We've done two.

If we could find a decent 300K, I'd like to do one of those as well - check! Had to go to Queensland for that.

At least one cycling tour of some length in 2016 - check! Well, we've done several hub and spoke tours, but might do an overnight tour when spring comes.

Walk 1000 km - I'm on pace for that. Halfway there.

Running - check! I have actually started running just recently.

Other stuff like rowing and hiking - check! Rowing anyway. But I don't think we've done a hike yet. Still would like to.

Several centuries in 2016. More than just two. - check! There was the two 200Ks and one 300K, and I'd have to check my records but it seems to me that there was a century in there somewhere too.

Half a year to go!

I'm done!

Three DCs for the CA triple crown. Just shy of 3k miles to date- over projected.

Now I can just screw around for the rest of the year.

Just had a look and I'm at 3000 km for the year so far. And I've still got spring and half of summer yet to come!

Do an overnight ride in Antarctica (I'm gonna call it a tour). Got the Antarctica bit sorted, got the bike bit sorted, just need to see if the system will allow it.

It should do. Mercury journo and Audax randonneur Dave Killick did a trip to Mawson's Hut recently, and did an MTB ride. Pix were posted somewhere. However, the MTB was there already... so at least someone was able to persuade the system to work for them.

Which station are you going to?

That's the really nice part about achieving targets. And there are some other achievements that suddenly become... achievable out of it all, just by "screwing around".

Davis. There are Fat Bikes there, but naturally you can't just ride off into the distance... The base is surrounded by some very fragile terrain, tracks in the wrong place may last for thousands of years. Plus there's the safety aspect, they can't have random noobs like me wandering everywhere. If it's possible to ride to a hut, great, if not it'll still be an experience riding there anyway.

In the meantime we've got 7 weeks on the North American Pacific Coast

Finish upgrading my Tiagra (9 speed) drive train to 105 (11 speed), just need to find a gently used 105 crankset. I want to get outside more as this past year as I spent mostly riding indoors with Zwift.

3 for 4, so not bad. 4 if you count Zwift races, but they're just not the same. My only excuse is I didn't want to travel every weekend with a 2 year old, and the closest race to me was still over an hour away.

I went from close to 180 lbs on Jan 1 to 163 by this past August (it jumps around 163-167 depending on a variety of things). FTP test on Jan 4 put me at 302W, which was about 3.7 W/kg. My last FTP test was in August, but it still feels accurate, and that was 338W. At about 74.4 kg (164 lbs), that makes me 4.54 W/kg. New baby due any day (my guess is tonight or tomorrow), so 2017 will likely see a significant drop.

Got a CAAD10 this past summer. Always wanted one, and it makes a nice race bike so I don't have to risk my Lynskey. With the new kid, likely no races in 2017, so the CAAD might be sold off (and then I can get another Scott Addict with the team discount in 2018).

Avoided getting hit by an F-150 this year, but I did get my first flat in 6 years.

Well, I failed.

I bought two new bikes this year and two sets of wheels.

But, I did the Tour and am slightly under my time goal with 335 hours put in.

I learned to ride rollers OK (still room for lots of improvement), and did finish closer to the front than the back in two races. Goal for 2017 is to continue to improve, and NOT crash.

I did slack a bit the second half of the year, & ending with mileage a little below projected,

but faster than a year ago, & raised LTHR substantially.
