Brake caliper recessed nut question
I'm just trying to get this right and learn a little as I go. This is my first build on a carbon frame.
I'm swapping Campy components from a CAAD8 frame to a Merckx carbon frame, and the rear brake bridge is quite a bit thicker than the alloy bridge. How many threads should be engaged to be sure of a safe installation of the brake caliper?
Should I be looking for a 1/4" or 6mm insertion depth? Is that sufficient?
I have some longer recessed nuts, and I can turn them down on the lathe if they're too long.

First reply, from a non mech! (altho I did run a car repair shop (mine) for 14 years)
I'd feel fine if there were 3 full threads. I don't think there's much stress pulling against the nut.

The general rule for thread overlap is a minimum of 4 threads of engagement. I would feel better with at least 5 or 6 though on my bikes. Andy

It's only the rear brake... how much force does it see before the wheel locks up?
I only use mine for handling balance into tight turns.

I got everything to fit. The front caliper had 5mm or thereabouts of insertion. I had to shorten a 30mm recessed nut down to 26mm to get a good fit in the rear, so I have 5mm of insertion there too.
On to the next issue.
