Greetings from an accidental bicycle collector
I am retired and split time between the Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California and Sedona in Northern Arizona. I am a life-long old car guy (sorry!) and model enthusiast who somehow attracts bicycles. Ten of them at the moment! For the last several years, I have become more and more interested in preserving /restoring the bikes that have one way or another come into my life. This forum is an inspiration ... true enthusiasts sharing knowledge and encouraging the best in the sport and hobby. You will find me poking about in the vintage section, as my oldest is the 1965 Phillips I bought new for University and the newest a 2008 Specialized MTB ... which I guess isn’t very new anymore. I very much look forward to learning more about how to care for and enjoy these wonderful machines. Cheers!

I am right with you dnkjones, except I am a full time in TX. I began collecting bicycles for a retirement project in 1998 and currently own 36. A few are like new (one actually is), but most need refurbishing, some need refinishing. I have a 24' x 24' climate controlled shop to work in located in my back yard. The last ten years I've found a complete support network across the USA for parts, tools, and top notch bicycle related services. I recommend Bicycling Magazine's Complete Guide to Bicycle Maintenance and Repair for Road and Mountain Bikes by Jim Langley 1999 edition. It will cover all the components you have. You can pick a copy up at BIBLIO.COM for under ten dollars (including shipping). Here's the link https://www.biblio.com
(Should you need specific help with the PHILLIPS, there are some fine fellows here, as well as in several FACEBOOK groups dealing exclusively with British bikes.)
I will be looking for your posts, and Best regards!

welcome, you picked a good forum to join. it's very active! yeah 2008 isn't new. stinks huh?
you're a car guy, right? I was shopping for tires & found some but even tho they were never mounted, they were manufactured in 2010, so that makes them 8 years old & you're supposed to chuck tires after they are 10 years old, right? so if I put them on next winter I'd only get a two legit years out of them?

Welcome from western Oregon.
Did you ever ride the BigDipper? Is it still there?
First time I saw it was around 1963. i remember it looked old. I was 12.
I still think of it as my favorite coaster.

Thanks one and all for the welcome and the first of many great tips! Yes I will be buying that book! YES the Big Dipper is still the star of the Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk, still one of the largest and oldest wooden roller coasters. To be clear, the 1967 and 1970 Schwinns, the 1984 Peugeot, and the 1990 Nishiki needed only tires, a lot of polishing and cleaning, and a tune up at the LBS to look and run nearly as new. The Phillips and the 1969 Schwinn Paramount are another story. Both sat for decades and need a lot of help to come back to life. I am really looking forward to the job, with coaching from the folks here. And as far as tires, one of my car friends was killed running old tires on his 1959 Jensen. Don’t do it. High speed blowouts are really nasty. Thanks again, all!
