2018 Wolfpack Hustle L.A. Marathon Crash Ride

This ride is one of my favorite rides ever. I’m confined to a wheelchair now, so I’m thinking I won’t ever do this ride again, but if you can, I highly recommend it.

However, it’s officially not happening. That won’t stop a bunch of people from showing up at Tangs donuts (now closed, I believe) or McDonalds across the street and riding the marathon course as the city shuts down the streets for the marathon at about 5 am. Again, it’s a blast. I always found parking in the Kaiser parking lot to be very convenient.

From the Wolfpack Hustle Facebook page:

NOTICE REGARDING MARATHON CRASH RIDE: Lots of questions coming in about the Marathon Crash Ride, Like last year, Wolfpack Hustle is not organizing it this year either. Just want to say THANK YOU ALL for the memories that will last a life time. This event is nearly 10 years old and through the years, we did something that altered the culture in this car dependent city. Being together with all of you on bikes riding freely on the streets of this beautiful city at night... has been the most beautiful experience of community many of us have ever had in Los Angeles. We together saw thousands and thousands of people of EVERY background, religion, creed, race, sexual identity, political belief, having the time of their lives AS ONE over the years and for that lets thank each other and love each other. Enjoy yourselves, life is short, these are the good times, they've always been. Tangs at Ten forever.

At one point, it seemed like the city simply gave the ride over to some other group for charity. That ride has also been cancelled: https://www.lalandmarkride.com/

Not surprised at all it was cancelled. It was incredibly expensive, and that's before considering that it is also a 26 mile ride. No services provided, just give us money.

I wonder if it will turn into a real crash ride now. That actually would be more fun. I will attempt to crash.

Yah, that Landmark Ride was being put on by City of Hope. And the entry fee was STEEP. I hope you get to ride it, and it’s as much fun as it has been for me in the past!

I live less than a mile from Tangs if anyone wants to crash, pun intended.

Last year I simply turned it into a solo century. I was already up, on my bike, by the beach, at a super early time. Why bother taking the metro home, I have a bike!

It seems like there still might be a ride happening, just not Wolfpack sponsored: https://www.facebook.com/events/1722...tab=discussion

I suspected this would happen. I should have posted my suspicion to validate it. Now it’s just me saying I knew it would happen, with no proof!

From the FB page:

UPDATE: LAPD meeting on Thursday. Apparently there are group organizing to do the ride and LAPD would like to escort the rides safely. More info soon.

They don't care to escort bikes safely when the streets are full of cars, why the sudden concern for cyclists when there are no cars on the closed roads? Seems less than genuine.

How many people are attending these rides?

In Portland there are a couple of hilly half century rides.

RondePDX

They've created a website, and post the rides up there. Apparently even post a fake cancelled notice at times.

Somewhere around 100 riders show up to the rides and do the rides. Groups spread out quickly with the hills.

No costs associated, just show up 10:00 AM ready to ride.

Ahhh, so the Marathon Crash Ride is pre-Marathon.

Roads already closed. It shouldn't be too hard to just let people take off as long as they don't interfere with the runners.

The organizer and I have been chatting on their FB site. He offered to drage along in his pedicab! That may be one of the nicest offers from someone I met once 5 years ago that I’ve ever gotten!

Well, that is IF anybody were going to ride this ride against the City’s orders!

Judging by the Facebook page, the ride will be like last year. Start at Tangs, no riding on the course from downtown, police escort.

Last year I made it a century by heading up to Malibu, going across the Santa Monica mountains into the valley and back around. Thinking about simply going to Long Beach afterwards and taking the Blue Line back. Anyone care to join? I am not getting up that early to only do 26 miles.

Yeah that’s good last year was good fun

I’m taking a couple of noobies so coming back might require several pit stops but that’s fine I’m in no hurry. We will just have to find some food and beer on the ride back so I’m not complaining

I hope it’s as many people as in the years past it’s always fun riding on the closed streets through Hollywood , Beverly Hills and down to the beach

Have a fun ride everyone

You won't be able to stop along the way since the police need to clear the road for the runners. Thankfully, it is mainly downhill.

Rode the Maraton route with my wife, easy peasy. We started at about 5:30 and were in Santa Monica a couple hours later. Plenty of police and parking enforcement vehicles along the way so not totally vehicle free, but still a lot of fun. I never ran so many red lights before, especially with all the LEO's just feet away. Good times.

I rode out early and started with the main pack. Finished with most of the front guys from what I could see. Finished the course in 52 minutes(someone made a strava segment for it) It was cold out there, 41f, but it was good fun and I warmed up pretty quickly trying to keep up with stronger guys.

Here are some 360 shots I took at the very beginning before things started heating up... low light shots with a cheaper 360 makes for less than stellar shots but you get the idea:

Starting point before the rollout:

A couple of shots along the route.... hollywood blvd I think:

The ride was good fun again ....we didn’t get there until 4:30 it’s hard getting everyone up that early so we played catch-up the whole ride but it was a nice comfortable ride on the closed streets

Down at the beach we stopped and got a nice hot coffee to battle off the chill

It was very enjoyable just as in the past has been and everyone is looking forward to next years ride already

I should have crashed the crash ride. Started at the "official" start time of 4am, which is way too early. By the time you get to Santa Monica, it is 5am. That is two hours before sunrise and not a single cafe is open. It was also much colder this year.

Was planning to do a solo century, but bailed at the finish and took the Expo line back. I wore clothing for a warmer century ride, which was not enough at 5am. Also was not going to go up the PCH at that time.
