Jeepers that's bike porn, especially on this thread. Gorgeous. Amazing how many of these bikes are still out there, after all the (true) hype. That one is so rare, boggles the mind, for sure. Take that to a C&V show and let the spaghetti cult drool over that sushi.

I've got some changes brewing and hopefully will be posting pics soon.
Speaking of changes, I'd like to get some tricolor STI's like I sold @oddjob2. Currently my Carbon Ironman has DT shifters, which aren't bad but I keep trying to change gears as if they are brifters. Boy you can get used to that pretty quick.

I rode 20 or 25 relatively hilly miles today with the guy who bought my '88 yellow fade master with 9 speed ultegra. I told him if he decides to get another bike and decides to sell it let me have first crack at it. He said he might buy another bike but wouldn't sell his Ironman, I think he's hooked. But you know how it goes, you fall in love with biking then sell your bike then buy a newer latest greatest then try to buy a bike like the one you first sold to give "That Feeling" again. But I'd buy it, strip all the 9 speed off and hold the frame to sell back to him when he realized what he did.
BTW that kid can ride (you know you're getting up there when you describe someone close to 30 as a kid). Unlike last weekend where we rode pretty much side by side, this time I let him dictate the pace. Boy, we were riding at a steady quick clip. I was impressed not only by his speed but more so by his consistent pace. When he finally let off a bit I pulled beside him and reminded him we still have to turn around and go back. He said yeah I thought about that. He comes from a running background and participates in cross fit classes. He's much fitter than my initial thoughts. He's my height but weighs 25 pounds less than me. Interestingly he's the exact weight I hope to be at come July. One thing for sure, I work harder riding with other people, as opposed to by myself. So it's a good way for me to tax myself and hopefully get in racing shape quicker. Hopefully we'll continue riding together on weekends.

My knee is still not 100 percent, but I'm ok with it for now. I've resigned myself to swimming m,w,f and actually biking outdoors m,w,f. I swim at a center for only 30 minutes while my 3 year old daughter is in the day care upstairs. After, I go get her and I take her swimming in the same pool for swimming lessons by me. I'm trying to get her to swim before she turns 4. My son has the family record of being able to swim across the pool when he was only 4 years old.
On Tue and Thurs I bike indoor trainer for an hour and walk to the park pushing my daughter in the jogger stroller, maybe 2 miles. No running, probably for a while.
Keep those freewheels spinning Irongents, Spring is practically Here!

If the bars and stem work for you wrt fit, leave well enough alone. But if you’re swapping stuff, that tape is pretty tuff. It looks like the stuff that came on my 87 and i took it off to move the bars (too narrow) and the stem(too short) to my wife’s bike. Input the tape back on my bike. THEN, removed and replaced the tape when changing the brake cable housing. I like the tape so much that the Fizik i bought to replace it has been sitting on the shelf for months. I’m hoping to get new bars tomorrow (CL) and will probably keep the old tape.

Hi , here is something different . This bike started out as just a frame to me that a guy gave me and if I didn't take it , it was going in the dumpster . It was a 58cm 85' Comp/TA , rusty , dented and mangled by some kid that tried to get the cable guides off with a hammer and chisel . First I brazed on some track ends , then I bought a NJS Kerin racer fork . I had to weld on a new steering tube because I couldn't find one long enough , head set is Tange Seiki . Next came paint a nice metallic deep blue , turned out ok for a rattle can back yard attempt . I collected all the other stuff from the Bay and CL , wheels are no name track hubs ( loose ball ) rims are Mavic Reflex tubulars , tires are Victorias that will be coming off . Bars and stem Nito NJS , crank is from a Felt track bike , seat post is original Comp/ TA the seat is a Kashimax BMX . Well here it is hope you like it . I do, but right now my appointments are filled up until May. I can provide my agent's contact info if you're interested in setting up a time for my autographs.

Someone posted this gig at a local cycle group on FB and they wanted to pay a few people $50 to ride their bikes around downtown for a couple hours. It was a no brainer.

Every time you think you have decided on your favorite color combo, along comes a pristine example like this that causes you to reevaluate. Very hot. Smoking!

ok, i may be a virgin in the world of Ironman collectors but I have had the itch for about 6 months and look at ads pretty much daily. I did end up buying by far the nicest of any of the examples I was considering. I either got lucky and found a unicorn or proved that persistence and patience win out.

Pretty good deal. I've been an extra on a couple of movies. We were paid in bologna sammiches and sodas. Oliver Stone is a cheap bastard.

My Carbon Ironman is missing the chain hanger. I tried to screw in a bottle cage bolt but it immediately stops before I can make a complete rotation. Any idea or thoughts on what size bolt or thread count I might try? I'm anxious to make sure I cover that hole, worse case scenario I'll use some shoe goo as I don't want water to enter the frame.
@poke em was gracious enough to send me a pic of his chain hanger. He wasn't sure if it screwed in, I'm pretty sure it does, but not sure enough to ask him to try to unscrew it. Here's his pic.

I am not an expert- but in most CF applications one does not thread the CF directly: but rather glue in an insert that is then threaded (like aluminum). I'd be surprised if the cf itself is threaded (though it can be done). Id be less surprised if hanger had simply been glued in place.

in any case, for you- i'd consider just finding a hanger that fits fairly snug and using some epoxy.

I never even use those hangers. Unless you do, I'd be inclined to just fill-in the hole.

+1
Shoe Goo shrinks and gets brittle.
I'd probably use PlastiDip and cover with a piece of maskig tape until it sets.

Ive attached a pic to show the threads, however as @jetboy theorized it could just be the layered CF.
My original intention was to replace with a cage bolt to preserve integrity not to necessarily use the chain hanger. Because as we all know early CF was still a work in progress and later CF still has issues.
Looking at the lugs it resembles jbweld which i know its not but i could use it, maybe.
Also the cable guides seem to be glued and riveted.
Next will be locating an appropriate chain stay guard. I was thinking aluminum, then clear as I like that carbon look, however I don't want to damage the clear coating.
I'm gonna make some changes to it, and total rebuild, pics to follow. I'm just enjoying it too much to stop and overhaul. As much as I dislike admitting it, it does seem to ride maybe slightly better than the steel, but the anxiety of waiting for it to "assplode" as @canklecat has mentioned, may render it not worth riding..... nah its worth it. Hey we all gotta go sometime, might as well be riding on a Centurion Ironman. I've got to admit my fantasy way of dying is to be shot by a jealous husband when I'm 100 years old.

That looks like an aluminum insert to me- and yes threaded. that makes more sense than threading the CF- it looks like its taken some damage so i would try a tap first to see if you can clean up the threads. its probably something metric and standard, like a m6x1. time to get your caliper out! if you are careful you can even measure the pitch between the threads. mostly just check to see if its 1mm or larger between the two ridges peak to peak.

No, not at all. But I have been over the frame with literally a magnifying glass.

I tore it down today minus bb. It needed it. Waiting on cable cutters then new pics coming.
BTW, I intend to do another comparison however this time using same wheels. 3 of the 4 I have are 7 speed. I did that intentionally because my race wheels are freewheel only, so I can use all my bikes at any given race. I'm trying so hard to keep my Carbon Ironman a road bike but I have one last set of the original Scott DH Aero Bars.

In the aero tuck, you may find the frame too flexible for satisfaction. 54cm may be different, but I sold a 56cm frameset to a triathlete, he returned it (and I built him the Miami Vice tri-bike you've seen here.). My perception is that the fork is a bit flexible for setting on with your elbows, and expecting the sort of precise feedback you get on steel.

PS: Chain guard on the IM Carbon-look around, be patient, go chrome. The look is really nice.
