Terrible road cycling "fashion".

Some riders do look sharp in all black, but not many. For most it is not a simple, stylish and elegant look; its just plain, style-less and lumpy.

Not really fashion, but I cringe seeing folks sitting up with flapping unzipped vest/jacket-
a flagrant waste of wattage.
Thigh-slapping floppy saddle bags also bother me.
Big fan of hi-vis socks/booties, 'tho....

Didn't he wear some bike garb along these lines? What color socks would go with this?
This is a new one.. haven't seen before:

OK. This issue is really not so simple. Yes, a little color can go a long way, but how the color is used also makes a difference.
With enough scattered logos like you get on heavily-sponsored team kit, or bold enough patches and patterns, sure, a mostly black/very dark gray kit looks equally good on most people. One of the big CRCA sub-team's kit is a good example.
If one must have black kit, this doesn't look half bad. The orange isn't just some "pop" of color, it's fairly pervasive. But the Mavic example - I'm not so sure. Often, designs like that jersey demand a very well-shaped and -proportioned figure to come off right. Otherwise, they just highlight the overall peculiarity of the wearer's shape. Generally speaking such designs are very smart looking in and of themselves, but they tend to be unflattering and don't look anywhere near as smart on the rider.

I wear black with a little bi of red, and white. It looks fine. It really comes down to what kit you're buying. I believe in solid colours either way. Most cycling kits are ugly as them come so we really shouldn't talk about cycling fashion sense.

While the males in this photo don't offend, only the female is truly stylish. One very nice touch is that the inside of her collar has some color which compliments the rest of her kit.
The men are wearing the cycling equivalent of blue jeans and sneakers, everyday apparel. The fact that they are all wearing the same jerseys and bibs doesn't make it stylish.

If y'all saw what I wear for running errands, you'd immediately forget your issues with cyclists' fashions.

edit add: By the way, the woman's jersey is the same as everyone else's; what you notice is the loose end of her helmet strap. While the riders next to her have black straps, she and most others have orange straps on their helmets.
This is the great thing about team kit; someone or some group of people figures out all the colors and such. A rider just has to get the right size, and bingo: all put together! Even with "ugly" team kit, the intentionality comes through and can be appreciated.

Sorry, but HTFU has no place in discussions of appropriate color. Regardless of its physiological effects or lack thereof, black is a poor choice for athletic apparel, especially worn outside. Black is for indoors, evenings, and for somber people and occasions. It doesn't look badass, it just looks bad. Cyclists aren't ninjas, and if you ask me, an all black getup is about as ridiculous looking as they get. Black shorts are the norm only on account of convenience and modesty

My cycling fashion choices are usually dictated by what's randomly on top in my cycling drawer. Sometimes it's been all solid black, plus black socks and black shoes. The helmet is black and grey. It probably does look ridiculous, especially if I'm on my black bike, I never really thought much about it. I can say though that it doesn't feel any hotter to me than other colors, and any difference in visibility is slight enough that I've never noticed.

According to me (which is what really matters), the following are cycling fashion offenses:
1) high socks - but if you want to look like a dork, go for it. Add some silly pattern or cartoon for extra dork points.
2) baggy jersey - c'mon, I know you can blow me off the tarmac...but can you at least look a little aero while doing it?
3) the all black kit - Ninja's don't ride bikes...or do they?
