You can definitely still ride the trainer, and can probably still ride outside. The last time I broke my wrist I was riding outside within a week, just couldn't pull on the bars at all. If you do that be prepared for some really weird tan lines. Oh and obviously your cast is going to smell like ****.

doc says the cast will be replaced every 2 weeks. 6 week recovery time. gonna have to do everything with 1 hand and keep it out of water in the shower. at least i chose blue cast to commemorate the bike that i broke

Pretty much the worst feeling is sitting in a soaking wet cast (inside from sweat) late in the day, after a whole day of sitting in the wet. Glad to have mine off. Hang in there

Wrap it in Saran Wrap when you shower to keep it dry.

A wet wet cast really is miserable.

Plastic Bag and rubber band worked fine for me. I'd think saran wrap would leak like a sieve.

I've used that as well, though I was at the beach and the rubber band was so tight, it cut off circulation and caused other problems - but that was probably related more to the fact that I was trying to keep the bag on in the ocean and not a shower.

Sucks man!

Race/ride long enough and you'll have to deal with injury. Just be patient with recovery and don't push it too much is my advice.

Racing will always be there - it's tempting to rush recovery in order to get back to your season but you don't want to make things worse (by say, crashing again with a cast on, etc).

Easier said than done though - I've been racing with a splinted finger so I don't even take my own advice!

You need to learn to break the right bones. I did the whole cast thing when I was in like 3rd grade and realized how much putting a bread bag around it to keep it dry in the middle of summer sucked. Since then I only break collar bones (3x). No worries about getting them wet.

Seriously, heal up!

thanks for the kind words. fortunately, i'm already seeing progress. yesterday, i couldn't use the left hand at all. now, i'm typing words with it and have pretty much full range of motion in my fingers. perhaps that's just the swelling going away, but if I can get some grip strength back for the front brake lever, i might be back on the bike outside sooner than anticipated, maybe.. we shall see.

i do have a kickr, and got it after trying it out at my friend's house. but after using it a few times, gotta say that thing really sucks to ride on, after the novelty factor runs out. much prefer riding outside with the trees and stuff.

You could always get a couple of bonsais and place them around the KICKR.

Best summer on the bike I ever had came after breaking my wrist and getting forced to rest and do some structure in April/May/June. had so much fitness for summer crits.
