Bike Forum ride in OC - gauging interest
OK guys, let's see how many of you can still balance on a bike and/or have the cojones to ride it on the streets of Orange County. We are thinking of organizing a BikeForums ride, like the one we did in 2013. Here is the original thread. The ride will be held on Saturday, 6/23/2018, the route will be the same as in 2013, but the riders will be 5 years older.
There will be just one coffee stop - at the Crystal Cove on PCH. Please post here if you'd be interested and include your preference for a start time (8:00 or 9:00 AM or anywhere in between).

I'm interested. I live 3 miles from the IRvine train station and am the ride coordinator for BCI, we ride these roads all the time. Is there a most recent RidewithGPS version on the route? Looking at the old thread there were a few bobbles in the routing esp Peters Canyon, Harvard and SD creek trail. I can clean those up, I think the overall route is good, definitely some good climbs, and some pain on Vista del Lago, it hits 12% near the top. More pain is available by looping over Modjeska grade off Santiago Canyon Rd if there is anyone interested, maxes out at 17%, but it is short. Doesn't add much distance.
FYI there is road construction and repaving going on in Santiago Canyon. They have warned about bike lane closures, but I think this is weekdays only. It's only been a couple of weeks since they started and I haven't been thru there since.

For those interested/curious, the World Cup games on June 23rd are:
05am: Belgium - Tunisia
08am: Korea Republic - Mexico
11am: Germany - Sweden
Doing long weekend rides will be impossible for me for a month!

I didn't even list the 5am at first, but then I thought I might offend someone.
Fox Soccer is now fully behind Team Mexico for some strange reason and any Mexican game will be popular locally. Sorry for the soccer talk, but the other thread did have baseball chat.

i'd generally rather ride than watch most sporting events. i do have an interest in the world cup but
these games are not overwhelming enuff to keep me off the bike.

I have almost no interest in watching any sporting event on TV. Even cycling, (I still have Paris-Roubaix and most of TOC unwatched on the DVR) let alone any other sport. I'd much rather do something than watch something.
I do root for the local teams to make playoffs, superbowls, world series, etc. as there is a noticeable decrease in traffic when those games are on TV. Presents a good opportunity to go out and do something else.

I canceled my TV provider, so I can't watch sports anymore. Let's see if I can survive college football season unplugged. Most of the time, my kids have their OWN sporting events that keep me away from the TV anyway.
I can't remember why I had to miss the 2013 edition of the Left Turn Tour but I need to make up for that.

If you're going to be there,, JimmyNH, I'll definitely be there!
Will see if I can talk Terah into coming.
In fact, I don't feel like waiting that long. When are we going riding again comrade!

I miss riding with you guys - got to explore quite a bit of OC and had a blast despite suffering most of the time. Lost quite a bit of cycling fitness since I moved. And yesterday I just dropped $1700 on an ebike to commute to work...

OK, so far the response has been overwhelming.
- Jimincalif (yes, please, if you can map it on RideWithGPS, that will be great. And the Pieters Canyon bikepath is fine).
- CalamariChris (of course I'll show up, so you're in, boet
)
- Ooga-booga (for 50-75% of the ride. Unless you want to park at the Crystal cove, ride to the start and then ride with us back to the Crystal cove)
- TrojanHorse (no firm commitment, but I'll pensile you in provisionally)
That makes a huge crowd of 5. Do you still want to go ahead?

You gotta love the commitment and firm scheduling from the SoCal crowd... we still have a month to dredge the bottom of BF and find other people. And we need to find one person slower than me at least.

between the potential oc forum ride and the 4th of july gmr social, that's likely waay too many commitments for most within in the space of two weeks. maybe just focus on the gmr wednesday 4th of july forum ride?
thinking there might be a virginal handful (okay, one or two) of willing riders more interested (along with another handful of old-timers) in riding arguably socal's best mountain road/climb vs the ocean/foothills/flats/rollers of orange county.

between pizza, beer and the world cup, howsa person expected to prioritize cycling over the important things in life like pizza, beer and the world cup?
