Let me try that 2nd link again, since it is tall and RED. Not sure what year/model it is; missing decals.

Its your bike --- If you wanted to take a Cannondale Criterium, paint it British racing green and put Hetchins decals on it --- that's your journey . Have fun with your bikes I say

In 5 years I've only seen a handful of Raleighs my size locally and I bought the only one that was realistically priced, my '85 Prestige. That Raleigh is a nice bike for $100. I just snagged an '85 Voyageur last week for $100, the seller met me after work at a drug store right on my way. This is the seller's pic from the CL ad.
Here's another big Raleigh, but it's a touring model. Only $100 though. These Raleighs are definitely around, and often cheap, it just might take a few months before the right one turns up.

Yeah, I agree, that touring bike would be a very nice bike even for $400, it's nearly certain to get flipped. By someone who will ask $600 for it and it will hang around CL and Ebay, going unsold for months.
May be a Taiwanese Raleigh, in fact I'm pretty sure it is, that will bring the value down some.
I'm a bit spoiled because I live exactly halfway between LA and SF, so anything essentially in the entire state is drivable for me. And CA has got to be one of the hottest markets in the country for bikes, if not the hottest. I will say Midwesterners seems to get the most sweetheart deals though, old 531 Treks for $50 and less.

I know you don't want to jump model levels, but if you don't find what you want, My friends brother has this one that could be available. I had it in my position for awhile as I was going to buy it for parts as it's too big for me. I ended up giving it back. It's a black Raleigh USA Super Course about 1985.

Thanks we'll see what happens. I keep a bike journal and while looking for something else I came across an entry on a bike I passed on. My M-I-L's neighbor was selling an '85 Competition a few months ago for $90, that's the white one in the series. As I recall the paint was really trashed so I passed, it was my size..... Oops.

I'm baaaccckkkk!!!!!! Haven't touched a bike all Winter, haven't even thought about them except getting rid of most if not all of the lower end bikes this year but one thing I still wanted to do was my late model Grand Prix with a 1971 Grand Prix paint scheme and graphics. On a whim this afternoon I did an Ebay search for vintage Raleigh bike frames, first bike stuff I've looked at on Ebay since last Fall and what was the very first item on the list? Yup, you guessed it, it had only been on a couple hours too. It's pretty rough but it's exactly what I was looking for since it's getting stripped and painted anyway. Price was dirt cheap if you don't count shipping and even then it wasn't outrageous. Exactly what I've been looking for.

Congratulations on finding the right frame - time to revive those painting skills!
Can't wait to see the finished build.

Thanks, Velocal has the decals I need. Have to find a metallic red that's close. Depending on the condition of the chrome on the stays I may just leave a few inches out from the dropouts chrome to keep it more traditional looking. I'm going to put the correct '84-'85 tubing decal and country of manufacture on it ( yes, even if it's Taiwan) and keep the newer head badge but the rest of the graphics will be 1971. Haven't nailed down components yet but it will get brifters for sure and I have a NIB Brooks B-17 that's been waiting for just the right bike. One thing it has to have to complete the package though is a Pleischer rear rack, even if it sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm pretty stoked right now.

Well, it's here, it is a 1985 and "rough" is an understatement, the pictures didn't show how rough it really was, it is absolutely filthy and there's no saving the chrome, what hasn't peeled off is heavily pitted so no chrome socks on the rear stays unless I went to the trouble and expense of rechroming it and since my '71 didn't have them I can live without them on this. The fork isn't much better but it can be replaced, in fact I have a frame in need of a fork and it will work perfectly after a good cleaning and painting. The drive side seat stay was hit just about dead center and there's a small gouge which also bent the stay ever so slightly, you have to look close but it's there. I can straighten it no problem and fill and smooth the gouge. No other tube damage or dents and the inside of the frame is rust free. It should be as greasy as it is. The paint will have to be completely stripped which I planned on anyway. The handlebars are in good shape and the brakes, DT shifters and derailleurs while very dirty, scratched up and stained are fully functional. I'll clean them up for something else. I've got a lot of work ahead of me but I'm still stoked to get my hands on this and get started.

Sweet. Glad you found what you were looking for. This may sound weird, but when I get a bike, I either want the finish to be really good, or really trashed. I'll keep "really good" as it is. "really trashed" gives me no second thoughts about painting it up how I want.
Since we're on the topic of cloning bicycles. I'm putting my order in for a bike that intermixes Singer and Frejus DNA. 54 or 55 cm, please.
