Personally, I don't like white.
No white shoes.
No white helmet.
No white gloves.
No white bicycles.
No white saddles.
No white handlebar tape.
On the odd occasion I might wear white socks, but generally, no white socks.
A jersey can have some white, but it has to be offset by some other colour.
And of course, absolutely no white shorts.

How about .... no one tells anyone what to wear? How about, if you are not intelligent enough to dress yourself to your own standards, you work on that? And how about, here in the Land of the Free .... you try not to pee on everyone who isn't "free" exactly the way you want them to be?
You know what's funny .... this winter economically challenged kids and elderly folks and veterans ... will all be suffering horribly for lack of proper winter clothes. You want a project, try that one.

Perhaps for one specific piece or item, otherwise, its not that individual. There are generally acceptable style standards we all share. Particularly when we're in groups. Consider uniforms for example. In essence, you "kit" is the uniform of a cyclist.
As long as I don't get to see your butt or your pot belly on display. Some 600 lb guy stands up to get off the train and reveals his mile wide bear butt to the public. If you put me through that much trauma you bet your bottom dollar I'm going to tell you about it. That's the least I can do to return the favor.

Meanwhile, my view regarding cycling clothing faux pas, and fashion tips for coordinating accessories, is as follows:

Many of us give to charity. Lots.
And no one is telling anyone else what to wear.
Back on topic...
I feel like I need something racy. All of the stuff I've purchased since loosing weight are monochrome and understated. I think I need something which serves notice to the guys on the group ride that I am not going to be the last to the to of the climb. I might not be first to the top but you are going to have to work to pass me.
Maybe a Castelli Free AR 4.1 Limited Edition? Or is this too mainstream?

^ Wear that. Or green & yellow zebra stripes. Put the hurt on some people, even on one climb. After that, whichever jersey you wore will put them on notice.
Not the greatest example these days, but it's like the Tiger Woods red polo was. The red polo didn't mean anything before that.

Sure, okay. But, to my point, the fear of that polo came from what he did while wearing it, not because red polos are terrifying on their own. No one will look at Tim's jersey, be it Rapha, Castelli, or Lampre and think "wow, he bought that jersey, he's going to lay down some hurt on the climb". The jersey gains the reputation you give it; the reputation the jersey has already can only hurt you.

Well, I did get an Isadore Signature, which I suppose is as close as one can get to a cycling sweater. The wool goes from recumbent to rocking chair with effortless style. Wake me up when dinner is ready.
