File or grind off this chainring burr?

I can just file this off right? I think it was the cause of some occasional chain suck on a test ride of this used bike I just got. I tried to file it quickly this morning with a fine file I hand handy, but it was gonna need more work. photo from before I tried anything. I have a larger, courser file I can use but I also have a small grinding barrel for my drill, & I think maybe something for my cordless rotary tool. what would you use? it appears to be the only burr

I'd use a new chainring.

I would use a small file and some patience as opposed to taking a power tool to such a small defect.

How about cleaning it first with a wire brush or something?

just got this bike, yeah it's grody, but a wire brush isn't gonna get that burr off

safety glasses ... check!

file instead of power tool, check!

like to avoid a new chain ring, if I don't need it. if the chain suck goes away with the burr ...

I've filed them a bit in the past. Concentrate on where the chain is gonna ride, the rest doesn't matter unless you want to make it pretty. A small round file (carefully used) works pretty well in the teeth gaps.

I doubt that that little burr is the cause of your issue, but file away. With a good file it will be smooth in no time.
