Adding brifters to early 80s bike
Hi! I’m currently building up an early 80s univega super strada. I have a shimano 600 tri color group set I want to throw on it. My problem is that I cant seem to find appropriate downtube barrel adjusters that fit the brazes of the former shift levers. Any idea what I can use/do?

That particular Shimano braze-on has the added tab projecting forward making it incompatible with Campagnolo standard square down tube shifter boss STI barrel adjusters.
I seem to recall reading about a person who used a grinder to grind down that frame tab to convert it to the compatible geometry that will fit the conventional barrel adjusters.
But I would rather not modify a classic, potentially collectible 1980’s era frame. Why not cut a notch in the barrel adjuster plate to make room for the protrusion? AFAIK - the boss threads should still be the same as “standard” metric Campy standard down tube bosses.

Double downtube cable stop. This is a clamped on band with 2 casing stops. The wholesale supplier, J%B Imports, lists this one #14545 . They show nearly 400 available through their various shipping locations around the USA. Should be no more then $10. Might be available on line from a reseller too.
Or just go to a older service focused shop who has done a lot of 1970s/1980s work. SunTour, Campy, Shimano and a few others all had this clamp/stop available back then.
I do suggest using the braze on lever bosses as an anti sliding clamp stop. Snug the clamp up against the bosses to limit it's movement over time. Andy

Measure your downtube - these are for 28.6mm diameter.

Most downtube shifters won't fit on these bosses, so unless you plan to keep that era of Shimano 600 friction shifters, there's not much point to saving the bosses intact. The screw is a different thread pitch than most DT shifter bosses, but you can easily find the proper allen bolt at a hardware store.

I just finished doing this alteration on an old bike. I have a 1980 Miyata Pro on which I was installing D-A 8-speed shifter/brakes and needed to deal with the tab and the hole size to get a good fit. Since my project wasn’t on a collectible bike, I decided to go ahead and grind off the tabs. I also had to ream out the D-A cable stops to 1/2”. I found some suitable screws in my misc. parts bin, but I’d like to find some 4.5 screws for the stops. The stops sit flush on the frame and look fine. If your bike is collectible, use one of the other reversible methods.
