Double bike lane on Torrey Pines grade...

so yah...there's now a double bike lane on the locally famous torrey pines grade (outside part-not going thru the state park).
got a personal record on it today. coincidence? i can't believe there's a double bike lane. granted...there are no barriers between
cars and you but still...and both sides of the road are recently repaved. kudos to the respective powers that be. thank you!

Yeah it's pretty nice to have a slow lane and a fast lane for that climb up Torrey.

been a decade or so since I climbed the outside of the hill. I like the inside route and views.

ANNND they repaved both sides, so it's smoother to go up AND down.

I like the inside as well but not a fan the bumpy slog to the road by the driving range. It was much better when it was ok to descend the inside route. I still hit it but not as much as I used to now I prefer outside

The new lane is spectacularly smooth hit while it is fresh and it was more than nice of the city to make into two lanes for cars and a much more generous bike lane all smooth and purdy

did they remove all the cracks on the DH? they cold patched it a couple yrs ago, before that it was super sketch!! I'd be safer in the road at those speeds vs worry about my wheel exploding from impact at 40+

yes...all the cracks gone-for now. they asphalted the downhill bike lane too so we no longer have the old school concrete slabs with spaces in between comprising the downhill.

still mentally recovering from an nde shimmy experience descending wildcat canyon road during an aggro honking/punishment passing commuters/gamblers
filled afternoon ride 3 weeks ago. count me out >40 mph for a few more weeks.

speed wobbles are sketch!! I'm still leary of leaning the bike over allot at speeds, I got a front flat in on the entry of a hair pin on at lower Palomar Mt. Went to lean it and was on rim, lucky no cars were coming and there was a LARGE run off on the opposite side of the road. Kept it upright but scared to def. Swear ever since I can't bomb hills blazing anymore.

you would seem to have bad luck on palomar mtn. i remember you flatting on the bottom half of the s7 climb during one of the infrequent bike forums rides (we started from harrah's)
a few years ago. you blew past me (and probably Jimmy NH) on the upper slopes. i think there were only 4 of us goofballs at the start: you, me, Jimmy NH and GP. hamster (what
happened to him?) started late but arrived at mother's while we were still there recuperating.

i've misjudged the descent off palomar more than once on those switchbacks without a flat involved. lucky there wasn't a car/truck/motorcycle in the other lane cause if there had been...
curtains or a wheelchair.

last I heard they closed the road through the park for safety reasons. Is it open again? it's a pretty steep climb but for Nostalgia sake that's the route I'd want to take....if I still had the gears...

the road is closed for cyclists on the descent. you can still ride the entirety of the state park road uphill. just not downhill for the last few years.
methinx there may have been a few too many strava pr soldiers ripping the descent too close to the daily walkers, young lovers and various weekend warriors.

I commuted by bike from Cardiff to UTC from '96 to '99, always on the inside. By '99 I was turning in a 31:04 at the SDBC 20km time trials (42 years old at that time)

That 33mi RT commute and a really excellent job made for one of the best times of my life.

It's improved, but not as nice as it was in the late 1990's when I would routinely take the descent at over 50mph. Now? No way.

I remember doing that descent as fast as cars but that was necessary because you had to take the lane as the shoulder which was wide was but deadly-- although, don't know how much that may have changed in the 90s

One time in the late 1990's, I managed to pedal this (it was loaned to me) up the grade and descended at full speed and had to take the left lane on the road.
