1996 Mongoose Hilltopper, Luna Cycle BBSHD, Custom Battery Case & Remote Throttle
I also did a disc brake conversion.
Side View Mongoose Hilltopper Electric
Total weight: 75 Lbs.
BBSHD motor: 15 Lbs.
48v 24AH 1.1 Kilowatt li-ion Battery: 11.5 Lbs.
ABS plastic Battery Enclosure: 6 Lbs.
Console: 1.7 Lbs.
Bike: 36 Lbs.
Frame Material: 4130 Chrome Moly
Frame Make and Model: Mongoose Hilltopper
Frame Year Made: 1996
Top Speed: ??? I've got it governed back to 30mph and I can do 32mph. This is the halfway setting, I can crank it up to 60 and these things can hit 1600 watt peaks. As it is, I have it set to 1000 watt peaks which guarantees my super oversized battery will never break a sweat.
Depending upon how you ride it this battery will give you somewhere between 46 miles and 70 miles of range. And that is subtracting 20% that you always want to leave in the battery to avoid damage and to extend the cycles of the battery.
I can go across town and back (14 miles) and that drains me from 100% to slightly less than 80%. So I can do that almost four times before having to charge.
From LunaCylcle:
BBSHD (1500 watt "hotrod version") - This is specially made with extra heavy duty MOSFETs just for Lunacycle
48v 24AH 1.1 Kilowatt li-ion battery capable of 3000 watt peaks and 50 amp continuous
Smart Charger
Gear sensor
right half twist throttle (I hated this thing, recommend not using this and getting a thumb throttle. It's much safer)
36t Luna Chain ring
Killswitch
thumb throttle (right hand)
Triangle Battery Bag
From various suppliers:
26" tubeless ready wheels, DT swiss rims with Shimano Deore hubs
Continental CrossKing all around MTB tires, tubeless/ebike ready tires
Stans no tubes sealant
DT Swiss tubeless rim tape
tubeless presta valve stems
8 speed cassette (bike coop)
8 speed derailleur (bike coop)
Chaser Technologies disc brake conversion kit
Shimano SM RT64 disc rotors
Old disc calipers I found at the bike coop
Rock Shox Judy TT (bike coop)
Center Kick Stand
Heavy Duty KMC 8 speed chain
Adjustable Headset (bike coop)
Bike Rack, Heavy Duty 310 Lbs. capacity
heavy duty toggle switch with rubber boot
Headlight (4 5 watt LEDS) 48v
Taillight 48v
ABS plastic 1/4 "
cable operated throttle for motor cycle
Real leather saddle bags
Tools/Supplies Purchased for this build:
Rotor/cassette lockring tool
chain whip tool
Liquid Electrical Tape
Dielectric Grease
Permatex Black Plastic Weld
Marine Grade Dual wall Adhesive Lined Shrink Tube
Heat Shrink Solder Sleeve Crimpless Butt Conectors
Crank Extractor
1996 Mongoose Hilltopper before pic
The finish was really bad after 21 years
So I scraped it all off easily with a soft stainless steel guitar pick in a few hours and cleaned then polished it with Mothers Billet Metal Polish.
It was really amazing how mirror perfect this became after a mere 40 hours of dremeling and hand polishing.
Mongoose over Luna, Polishing done, ready for the BBSHD
Home made remote throttle assembly
remote throttle with cable stop and cable housing stop
Remote throttle assembly installed
Water proof, cable operated, motor cycle throttle
Disc Brake conversion done!
View of the console housing all the electronics normally on the handlebar.
I've been having a lot of fun with this thing!

A very loud motorcycle horn
A nice clean handlebar!
No rats nest of wires!
There are only three places cables enter the battery enclosure. One there in the front, one at the back down by the motor, and a gasketed cable groove for the tail light and gear sensor cables.
Motor cable port
Gear sensor / tail light cable port
All connections inside the battery enclosure are waterproof / corrosion proof using dielectric grease, silicone sealer, and liquid electrical tape.
The side panels have gaskets. All screws have been sealed with silicone sealer.

There is really nothing more satisfying than building a fine custom machine like this!

Nice work on the conversion and the e-build. I built one also with 1000 watts and 48 volts but only 10 AH. Your 24 would be great!
Mine was too fast for me-- (as an old guy) but the kid who bought it really liked the speed. I made him sign a waiver when he bought it! : )

I posted a video of my new 2018 Specialized Crosstrail with Hill Topper Horizon 350w conversion kit and other modifications I've made. So far I really like this bike!

I really love the fact that this battery is about four times larger than needed which give me a range of 50 to 70 miles depending upon how hard you push it.
The battery never breaks a sweat as this motor is governed back to about 1000 watts. The battery can put out 3000 watts and would be great for a 3000 watt cyclone mid drive motor. Which means this battery is hardly working at all and should last a much longer time as a result.

Nice mid drives-- what are the specs? I'm working in a bike shop where they sell Cannondales primarily. These mid drives are becoming pretty sweet and sleek.
I just bought an I-Zip Vibe 3 with mid drive. Nothing outstanding but I got a new '18 model at about half the original price. Impresssed with the help from just 350 watts.

Latest, a three-speed IGH cruiser with rear coaster brake and 48V, 1200w ebikeling DD front hub motor. Rides great with the motor off and 33 mph or so top speed. Tried to manufacture with as little "spaghetti" as possible.

First Mid Drive
This is my first mid drive. I have had several other ebikes in the past, as far back as 2007. Got this from Luna, as I am so busy I don't have time to build one. The Bafang motor is wicked fast. So far I just use the PAS and not the throttle.
At 23 mph I am ghost peddling. We have really steep hills here in Laguna Niguel, so the big motor really helps. No comparison to any of my past builds, 500W Ha!
