Just looking at the pics on Brians nice 86 IM and I got to wondering if the Shimano 14-28 would work on my 85. I believe I even may have one I got from a bike co-op when I was converting my old Schwinn Super Sport to a 6 speed cluster. I wanted to see if a 7 would fit but it didn't. I have already switched out the front ring to a 39t low on my 85 IM.

A 13-25 SunRace chromed freewheel works fine on the Ironman. Shifts smoothly, runs quietly. I might try a 13-28 SunRace if I can find the chromed version.

Same. The only way I could get the 14-28 SunRace to work was by removing the adjustable screws in the dropouts and pulling the wheels completely to the rear. Even then it tended to scrape the paint. I put the 14-28 on the Globe Carmel errand bike to replace the awful Shimano MegaRange freewheel.

While I was switching my old 10 speed Schwinn to a 12 speed, I looked at the ratios the 7 speed 14-28 gave and thought it would be suitable to my riding style. Thanks

This popped up in my area. looks like a transition bike.(from Centurion to Diamond Back) Expert but no TG. Maybe a 1990? Some Avenir parts. The crank is a Sugino Fuse.500. Someone with knowledge should tell us about the bike. Maybe I should snag it for the history alone. Nice color. Sticker on the fork says, "Diamond Back Unicrown."

Here's the brother to that one. Not a good pic and it's on CL in Austin. Diamond Back interval. Very similar.

Yeah Mark, I remember when that thing was on CL in your neck of the woods. When it got down to 200 I seriously thought about getting it. Luckily Van got it. That is really a cool paint job.

I'm curious because one of my someday projects is converting a similar frame to use with albatross or North Roads bars for a more relaxed riding position on a lightweight frame. I'm wondering whether a frame that's a little small for me might do better with an upright handlebar, and still avoid an ungainly stem extension.

I noticed your Ironmen ranged from 52 - 56cm. Did you ride them all? How was it, riding frames that were technically "too small" or large?

Trying to replace the cassette and chain on my 87 Miami Vice with the original 105 groupset. I thought I'd check in with you folks to see if these will work?

You should have No problems with that freewheel (not cassette) and that chain.
I purchased a chain with the same dimensions (for 6 speed) from walmart (bell) worked fine. I also used their 9 speed narrower bell chain with the 105 components and it works great too.I used the same 105 derailleurs but with gripshift 7 speed and 14-28 7 speed freewheel and although it worked it was noisey. Reportedly the 6 speed freewheel with 28t shouldn't be a problem/ noisey.

Wow is right , that is a good one . And looks to be my size too (56) . Actually I get a little put off when people sell for so cheap . IMO that bike would sell around 200-250 and that would be a bargain .
I forget what I paid for mine , I think about 400 (shipping was 100) and I know for sure I have another 300 into it . This one is in better condition than mine , when I first got mine .

So anyhow what are you doing today tex ? We could hop down to Chula Vista , snag this baby and then over to La Bufadora , Mexico for a few tacos . Oh wait a minute mswesti got kicked out of that town and they might remember me . OK Ensenada it is .
