Use a magnet on the fork. I think it may be steel. I could be wrong though.

1inch is all that will fit.
I put a full carbon fork on my Caad 3 and it was an improvement but my original fork was very heavy allu.

Wish it was steel. And it takes an oversized quill stem with a 1 1/8 diameter. No damage. Guess I'll build it and find out how it rides.

Early to mid-90s, they had a thing for oversized head tubes (not even counting Headshoks & their predecessors). My Killer V takes a 1 1/4" threadless headset. 🙄 I can definitely see that yours is bigger than 1", but it's not that obvious to most folks, until they get used to what they're seeing. 😉

Finished my BL last week. Complete teardown and refurbish. It is stock except for the wheels, rings, a couple of decals, and the usual consumables. The chain and 7spd freewheel are nos. I mounted the seat for pictures only, my 75 year old prostate can’t handle it ... seat is now safely stored away. Went out for it’s check flight this morning-37 miles at WRL. Ran perfect, so its out on the flight line with the other two.

Here's my Cannondale CAAD5, built up this year with Potenza 11 speed. Frame is a 66cm, but measures 69cm CTT. I've wanted this bike, for a long, long time...

Another 66cm Cannondale (a CAAD5 at that!) on the record! Looks great. Wish I didn't mind stretching out a tad more than I usually do over a frame to fit a 66. Alas, 63cm for me, but always a fan of seeing sweet large 'Dales.

Thanks for noticing! It's a fun bike and it actually fits me for a change. Not many options these days for us folks with tall stilts, and the supply of 66cm 'dales seem to be drying up.

You're welcome! At 6'5" the top tube, per my preferred reach, is 1cm too long, and making up for it with short stems/bar reaches just ends up looking a little weird, proportionally. Starting in 1989, the 66cm road frames were available, and thankfully continued well into the CAAD era as you have an example. I've seen pictures of another, I think, CAAD5 and it looks great. 27" touring frames were of course available a little bit earlier than 1989 and I don't see many of those at all. Maybe I'll find another 66cm frame to build and ride...I sold my 1989 SR800 frameset to a friend and he's building it up. Fits him perfectly.

I just acquired a 1986 Cannondale SR400 White today. I'll post a picture once I hit the elusive 10 posts.
Needs some work, but for now I'm just going to attach a cloud 9 seat & look into some tires.
Seems like everything on the bike is still stock besides the saddle.
Looking forward to having it torn down this spring & completed re-done.

Bikes: Wow, where to start? A collection of 1980's and early 90's road, touring, and MTBs from the likes of Trek, Schwinn, Cannondale, Fuji, Miyata, Univega, Panasonic, and GT. It has gotten rather out of control.

Question: I have a large frame 1987 ST400. I was thinking of swapping on a Shimano Deore DX full drivetrain(circa 1990) from a mountain bike to give it better lower gearing. Can you think of any issues I may encounter?
