Basso Frame ID

The obligatory annual Basso ID thread (found a lot of past ones). Since there are variations, I'm not certain what I've got. I don't think it's a Gap model, but hoping to get ideas on the alternatives out there. Pictures below. I realized I didn't take any fork pictures, but no helical coils in there, and no Columbus dove that I could find (but also needs a good cleanup). Still formulating a build plan, but leaning towards a full Italian (have some Campagnolo 7s C-record era Athena parts and several spare 3ttt/Cinelli stems/bars to put to use). Maybe pick up some neat Tipo HF hubs, always wanted some of those.
  • Appears to be the Americana paint scheme but need to verify. Definitely originally red around BB. Appears to be white around DT shifters/head tube. Covered in some crazy silver/blue/white spray, so slowly removing that (got a few solvents to try, WD40 as recommended by some for general cleaning was removing some of it).
  • Serial is 611066, so 1986 manufacture, maybe 1986/7 model?
  • No ridges in steerer
  • Water bottle bosses on ST and DT
  • Basso dropouts
  • 126mm rear (per seller, I should verify)
  • 27.0mm seatpost (per seller, I should verify)
  • 3 TT Cable Guides
  • Fork has Basso dropouts (didn't include any pictures)
  • Shimano 600 headset was installed (may or may not be original)

BB DS (cup is currently stuck)

SS DS

Pump Peg and DT Shifter Bosses

Basso Dropout

SS Brake Bridge

BB Bottom

TT Cable Guides (3)

My leading candidate would be a Basso Arrenacia which, circa 1986-1987 was Columbus SL/SP tretubi.

Seconded. 1986 Arrenacia would likely have Aelle stays and fork. Or some other...

Don't remember seeing an "Americana" palette with that though. I am leaning that it was originally all red...?

Always great to get some experts' input so quick! Thanks T-Mar and jdawginsc ! I'll post updates when I get to the bottom of the spray paint, see if it really is the Americana. Could take me a bit, probably a weekend only project as I have no garage ventilation (and the kiddos rooms are above the garage, opening and closing is a no-no at nighttime or early AM). May test a little solvent (got the typical acetone, Goof Off, Mineral Spirits, and denatured alcohol to play with) but I don't want to knock myself out. Curious to see condition of original paint. No chrome noticed (yet). Not too concerned on what I've got, frame should fit and is a nice little project and planning the build is always fun...

I've seen several that have been mostly or fully chromed, then painted over, but this one looks like a paint over steel...or a paint over paint over paint over steel!

T-Mar is the expert...I am simply the mentee!

Saw that one at Bikes Together, but to large for me. Good luck with cleaning it up, looking forward to the finished bike

If anyone has the 1986/1987 Basso catalog, what brakes came on these? The headset was Shimano 600, not sure if the group was 600 (DS BB cup was Sugino). I measured the front brake reach as 55mm, may need to remeasure but seems a bit long. May need to just find a good dual pivot front that looks fairly classic. I have some monoplaners for my other project bike, so I'll test fit those when I get a chance, but the reported 49/50 max reach is probably not enough unless my measurements were off (I did measure to C/L on a tall brake track rim).

Update

The grey and blue spray comes off OK but the red/blue was covered with what I think is a white primer, which is tougher to get off. Acetone and Goof Off (mostly acetone) one paper towel at a time. The advice I saw on here to saturate and wrap the frame a few hours would’ve probably been a good idea, but sneaking in an hour of stripping here and there. Fork and front end are white, rear triangle is white, middle of seat tube is white, BB and a bit outwards are red, and seat lug and a bit outwards are blue. No chrome. Some bare metal in spots, maybe had some rust or something to deal with before they oversprayed. Rough sanding scratch marks on metal and surrounding paint support that theory a bit. A 27.2 post slides in most of the way. A 27.0 might be too loose. Might get someone to look at reaming esp if I go get an alignment on it someday.

Worked to clean up the DS for a picture, definitely looks like the Americana paint.
