People like you impress me! But not enough to want to do it myself.
I hate cold.

Supposed to be in the 70s next week in Baltimore/Washington area - I just came down with either a bad cold or the f** word, hoping it is all over by then to get outdoors on the bike. Back in January, on a 60 degree day I managed to sneak in a long ride from my house in Ashton to friends' place in Solomon's Island.

Another trip north a couple weeks ago, another lap around Beltsville and Burtonsville. For some reason people think I'm insane to ride on 198.

I used to ride 198 between 29 and NH Avenue frequently, not a fun to bike on since it is essentially a two lane choke point between 4 lanes high speed traffic on both ends. I tend to avoid it now - Briggs Chaney Road is a much nicer alternate just a bit south, 216 to the north.

Well you might need a boat. We have broken the record rainfall for any month at over 15.5+ Inches for Baltimore. They still have this month listed as second. Recalculation in the morning will definitely brake the record.

Finally, a break from the rain around here. I managed to sneak in 3 laps around BWI at lunchtime yesterday for 32 miles and it looks like Saturday will be the day to get in a long ride - very nice weather predicted. Potomac Pedalers has a ride out of Laytonsville, not far from me, on Saturday.

I have road all week. Somehow I have managed to avoid the rain. Last Saturday was the only complete washout up here.
Similar pattern early next week. I hate this time of year.

Hi, from Ashton MD - just south and east of Columbia, MD. I didn't even know there was a Chantilly MD!
This has never been a very active forum - there is a Maryland Bicycling Group on Facebook that is similarly low energy.
I've managed to still get a decent amount of mileage in but have been largely avoiding any segments I used to do on various rail trails as they have gotten more crowded.

Yeah, old post........
Been dealing with it forever. Not a fan. And being in the asphalt jungle of the York road corridor does not help.
Now they are resurfacing York Road it's even more fun to mountain bike down it at 3 AM than it was before because it's in such horrible condition!

With rail trails if possible it's better to start further in. I can't do it because I have not owned a car in years, but it's how I use to do it. Again if possible.

Anyone have any suggestions for bike friendly areas of Baltimore? Is Charles Village better or worse for living car free than any other part of the city?

It is nice to see this thread have a spark of life, use to be very active.
Charles Village is decent as is Hampden (Hipster hangout). 2 of my kids live there as do a few friends. One of my kids lives car-free in Hampden. Hampden is nice because it is a true village, stores, restaurants, food stores, hardware etc. Bolton Hill and Mt Vernon are nice places to live as well, close to decent bike infrastructure and great homes. Fells Point and Canton are decent but more ouut of the way and traffic jams.
Post on Bikemore FB site for more info

Hey Charlie, Good to see you are still around. I keep forgetting to come back to this forum. I've found so many cycling friends from this thread I'm glad to see it isn't completely dead.

Hey how have you been!! A blast from the past!! I still ride occasionally with Noracer (Isaias) , Bod (Greaterbrown), Cycle rail (PJ), Maxine and Mike (Dr Mike). Last I remember about you is that your bike got ripped off in OC. Your kids must be pretty old now? College? high school? Off to West Va again, escaping the heat and humidity!!! ugh!
