Strava Flybys - Turned off by default
I noticed that Strava has now turned off flybys by default. I can no longer see them on my ride I uploaded today.
They can be reenabled in privacy settings. I wonder how many people will actually do this.

Well that sucks. Ive turned mine back on, but unless “everyone” else does too, its virtually a worthless feature.

I have always thought flybys was a bad feature. Sure it's interesting, but it's also very invasive of privacy. I don't think I have ever seen someone I knew on a flyby

I recently found and followed someone on Strava who I met while on a ride. He was headed one direction and I another, but we stopped and chatted for a bit. Turns out I had met him and chatted with him before when he was riding his recumbent trike in my town. Just checked, and yes, my flybys were turned off. So I guess he might have had his turned on because I found him, but I was unaware mine was turned off. I care about privacy but I really don't care who sees my rides or where I was riding.

I turned mine back on when I saw the notification yesterday. Like others, I think that it's useful in finding new routes and sometimes making connections with like-minded individuals. That said, I do think that having the Flyby feature set to 'Off" by default is the right decision.

I enjoy flybys after running races to see how I moved around in the field. I'll be turning mine back on.

They should probably do a better job encouraging people set up privacy zones around their house. That is the bigger invasion of privacy IMHO.

I have an Elemnt Bolt and the last ride that started and ended at my house respect the privacy zone, mind you it shows me the full route but if I share the link with anyone they see the map with privacy zone
it's useless to do so if another device shows your cards still...

Doesn't everybody just use heat maps to find new routes?

Lately I've been keeping my Strava more locked down and private. The flyby and segment leaderboards are cool features, but I guess maybe not my thing. I've had a few issues with road rage drivers and other idiots out there, and it made me realize that I don't really want my personal info being broadcast in a way that allows random people to easily identify me.
I still like to use the flyby and leaderboard stuff for races and group rides, but I keep all my uploads private/followers only, and only publicly broadcast a few.
Maybe the answer is that I need to make my Strava account more anonymous, and not use my real name on there?

That's how I do it, but I think you have to have a paid account to access heat maps.
On this topic - ridewithgps.com allows you to search routes based on location/keywords and is pretty useful if you're traveling to an unfamiliar area and looking for routes.

When I first started using Strava, I came home from a ride and found other people's rides linked to mine, including people using their full names. I could see where they lived, too...or at least where they started and stopped their rides, at houses on residential streets. I turned that feature off immediately. I'm not so much of a privacy freak in general, but I cannot think of anything good that could come from broadcasting this information to the world.

I'm not worried about getting a stalker, but if I was, I would definitely have the privacy on Strava locked down. it's a good move to make privacy the default and allow users to opt in to share their info. most of my rides start and end at my house, so I have 1/4 mile privacy zone on it. I try to start and stop tracking my ride at the end of my block so there's no chance that some creep could find my house that way.

I wonder if this has anything to do with a news story that a bunch of SJW's mistakenly went after the wrong guy due to an incident. The SJW/twitter army went after someone thinking a certain flyby was someone who insulted some/did something (don't exactly remember what actually started the incident). The Flyby date was close to the supposed incident, then the SJW/Twitter army used that flyby data to doxx, harrass, and someone correct me if I am wrong, get that guy fired from his job.
