Are you going for a welded solution or just cut off the base and insert in the tube and screw down the lock screws?

I never throw these old Merrills away!
Specific jobs, specific shoes...; ridin’, climbin’, hikin’ in different conditions, mowin’, etc’n...they’re like some old tires...I just don’t go as far with’em as I used to...

I have a similar situation. Bought the stand with this base-
it's very well made: maple, glue, even paint, but also a little stupid. Been on the lookout for a piece of steel plate,
but it hasn't shown up yet and all the steel fabricators in my area have folded.

Hmmmm...
I may be jumping the gun here... prob gonna use the aluminum and Park Tool blue trays here...I’ll install these before putting on the new base...gotta make sure it works first...
The blue tray really highlights things in the tray...things tend to disappear on the black ones...I’m actually reconsidering putting the two original trays back on! I like the compartments...

Acually that tube was scavenged from the other base...it screwed from the underside...
The lock screws should work fine...

Whew!
Right tools for the job!
Preliminary tests are trending towards...
Heck yeah, it works!
Weak point may be at the floor stand tube...
Balance wise, I have kitty-cornered the foot...ta da!
Can’t find my old’ pipe vice...improvised! Got a hammer and something to hit with it! Used manual agitation...bonified Nukler term...couldn’t say “Hit it with a hammer.”
Workin’! Just gotta accessorize now...pimp it up!

Something tells me you and I would really get along and that my wife wouldn't like either one of us.

From what I see in the pics, the stand base is the least of the issues with that shop space. Just pokin' fun. I really like the wood base. Obviously some thought and effort went into it.

I have found the new ones aren't as durable as a few years ago. A shame cause I never wore anything else.

Yup...
Yes. I have kept the last, literally, decades worth of Merrill’s, I buy Merrells at least two(2) pairs at a time.
I buy a high and a low hiking shoe at the same time with the idea that I will wear them for a long time and Merrell will drop certain models, raise prices...and yes, lower the quality...
I wear the most worn out shoes for crawlspaces and doing my lawn work...still so very comfortable!
I rotate the shoes so that no single pair is being worn exclusively.
I also wear these for my winter riding...thin ski socks, and newspaper bags, I ready to ride and walk home if I have to...
Ok...time for more coffee!

Now that the shoe destructor
has been fixed you need one of these to take over that task.
