Here's a pic of my 2002 LeMond Zurich with a triple crank. The components are all Ultegra. I use mtn bike SPD pedals on this bike. 52/42/30 crankset with a 9 speed cassette 12-28. Steel frame with a carbon fork. Been on a lot of rides on that bike and with the new 12-28 rear cassette there's pretty much nothing I can't climb. The bike originally came with a 12-25 cassette which when it was worn out in 2018 I replaced it with the 12-28 just because it was easy to do. Photo taken in December 2018 at Nong Bon Park about 4km from my home in Bangkok.
That's a Shimano FC-1057 crank and FD-6207 front derailleur. Stock RD and 12-28 7 speed cluster. The most recent triathlon I participated in was relatively flat except for a short steep hill right before the turn around point on the bike leg. The hill was only 400-500 yards long, but steep, especially at the bottom. Well, a lot of participants must not have pre scouted/rode the course, because I passed many of them walking their bikes up that hill. Up until that point, I had been on the big ring the whole time.

Original crankset was 50/45/30 and 13-28, but cadence was uncomfortably high on flat ground and even a slight tail breeze with 50/13 as top ratio, so changed out to a 54. With a decent tailwind, its fast!

Nice -- mine is a "Team Issue" frameset from Colorado Cyclist that i have begun stripping the paint -- i will polish and procure fresh decals for it before the build -----
I have decided to go with a 10 speed Record carbon group on that one though --- the triple is headed for one of my steel frame builds ! But i cant wait to get the Litespeed polished up and back into the rotation again !

I purchased this from sloar. The gearing is genius. Not sure if he gets credit for making it this way, or for having the sense to realize it didn't need tweaking. Still hoping for a Cino that I can make it to with this. Fingers crossed.

1971 Bob Jackson: I was still working on removing the anodization and polishing up the Strada Triple when this thread came up. Put the triple on yesterday. Even with the NR RD I was able to get it tuned in on the stand. It worked, but it felt like there was no room for any variations. Doing a test ride on this set-up tomorrow.
Opinions: If this doesn't work on the road, Do I put a NOS Campy Grand Tourismo on it? Or do a go for a long cage adaptor on a NR/SR? Or do I see if I can find a Rally RD?

No GT, those in general are scrap metal, nostalgia or not.
Long cage or Rally is the ticket, and yes they come with their own special baggage but can work very well with the right setup.

merziac Thanks for the input. I know the GT doesn't belong on this bike (some will argue that it only belongs on a desk or a wall). I have a NOS GT in the parts bin (don't ask why) so it's could be used as a place-holder until I get a long cage working. I'm now debating a "period correct" conversion of the NR vs. the cleaner versions available now. Of course if I run across a Rally at a reasonable price that will work. I did a quick search and the asking price for a Rally is way more than I'm willing to spend when a NR conversion looks pretty good.

merziac I bought the SOMA long cage adapter and installed it on my NR. It's working really well. I picked it up at my LBS and the Vintage Mechanic (Doesn't every LBS have a mechanic that specializing in vintage bikes?) also agreed that this was the best solution if I wanted to stay Campy. Thanks for your feedback it saved me a few weeks and probably a lot of frustration.

The Merz has a Rally that is original and as I said works great, is original and was the best solution of the time despite its reputation for snapping off and failing in other ways. Jim would not have used them if he didn't think they worked well enough.
I firmly believe they are good IF they are setup correctly, I do believe it is probably a narrow window with chainline, chain lenth, stop settings, gear ranges and all else.
I took that one to Eroica in 2017 and on one fairly long gravel down hill was bouncing around shifting through the gears till I was flat out in high gear.
The whole program was amazing, the faster I went, the better it rode and shifted, felt like it could go on like that for miles.
Again, Jim was/is a master of this, he worked with Spence Wolf who made his own long cages for his alpine gearing on many custom frames Jim built for his customers.
I can also admit to jamming it up a bit a few times but if you stop when it doesn't feel right I think you can avoid most all of the problems these are known for, operator error is often lost in translation when the POS supposedly blew up "all by itself".

Triple? Yes. Fast? No...ha ha. This was a CDN box store bike in the late 80's that weighs a ton, had cheap components but sold to the French CDN market. Thought it would make a decent hack around town bike.

I'm still a fan of triples. Here is my 1982 McLean. Velo Orange (made by IRD?) cranks with 48/34/24 rings, so I don't know if it looks fast. I'm not fast, especially in recent years. I never knew a crankset could make a bike ride better, but perhaps the chainrings' better machining makes it possible. The bike is quieter and shifts better.

Depends on what "fast" means... this is my most aggressively angled bike. 1986 Trek 400 Elance, with Suntour Command Shifters, XC Comp RD, XC Pro FD and Avocet touring triple crankset- with 50 and 42 drilled RINO rings and a Campagnolo 28.

I think my 1989 Waterford-built Paramount fits the description. Anyway, it goes as fast as I do.

I guess, maybe, my '71 International also fits the bill, but I tend to do more leisurely rides on it.

merziac -I read your post and thought it was a hell of a coincidence. When I was buying my SOMA long cage at my LBS on Thursday (Cupertino Bike Shop, Spence's old shop) I was admiring an old Spence NR modification on one of the vintage bikes for sale in the shop. I forget that Spence was widely known, I just know of him for his history at the Bike Shop I go to.
