Shimano 600 Freehub Removal

I bought an old bike that has Mavic rims (labeled "MA2 Argenta") laced to Shimano 600 hubs. It's an 8 speed. I am trying to remove the freehub but...am not having much luck.

Every source I have seen indicates a regular allen wrench will work but that does not seem to be the case.

Looking down into the hub I see splines that are much like that of a cassette lock-ring, only much smaller diameter. A quick internet search has not revealed any specialized tool.

Any ideas? Am I missing something?

Axle out, should be a 10mm allen.

The axle's out and I cleaned everything up. There's no visible damage to the splines but I just can't get the 10mm allen inserted...

Which Shimano 600? If 640X, 10mm allen should do the trick. If earlier, look up the Shimano manuals.

The early Shimano freehubs (the alloy shelled "performance" ones) used a splined removal tool. Much like a UG fw or HG lockring tool but smaller and longer, TL-FH10. Here's a shot of mine. The 14.74mm dimension is the tool's spline's OD (or what fits into the hub's splined fitting). Good luck finding one. Andy

Thanks...I managed to get the thing off using a 3/8" allen...not a perfect fit which I don't doing but I looked at the splines after I pulled it off and I don't see any damage.
