Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I mean, there's almost half a year between the earliest and latest ripening apples.

First weed eating session of the season. Same as it ever was. And local plums are on. Another tree fruit.

And mangoes. I don't have a pic of them. They get esten too quickly.

We have a date palm out front but I've never tried eating them. I always figure they're probably the wrong kind or will taste terrible for some other reason.

No. Neither do fresh figs, nor fresh mangoes. It's a shame.

I ordered a sampler pack of Science in Sport gels. Any other suggestions for gels that don't throw your stomach into a fit? I've used GU and Clif in the past and I didn't have good experiences with them.
I like GU and Hammer. But I have never had negative issues with gels

I grew up in orchard country. At the time, it was cherries, peaches, and apples, but as I understand it a lot of the farmers pulled up their cherry and peach trees and replaced them with apples. Mostly the pickers were migrant workers, who'd come North in June, and their first work was thinning peaches, presumably because more fruit set than the trees could handle.

Next was picking cherries, which IIRC was the first 2-3 weeks of July. For the processors, that meant 2 shifts every day, because everyone's cherries were ripe at the same time. Back in 1973, pickers got $0.35/bucket, and the good ones could pick 4-5 buckets an hour.

Peaches would be two weeks in August, usually the hottest part of August. They're even more tender than cherries, so the plant ran 2 10-hour shifts/day, because like the cherries they had to be processed immediately.

Then apples, which would just about last till late November. Most apples take well to cold storage, so that's where most of them went, and then they'd be brought out and processed through the winter and spring.

I can't bring myself to do gels on the bike, because I don't like having sticky hands and I've seen too many empty gel packets on the roadside. So I eat Clif bars, which create their own issues, but not till hours later.

Try something like Clif Bloks. I really like them, especially for longer rides. They are almost like a treat. I'll usually go through three of them on a century and I'll also eat a couple of Honey Stinger Waffles and / or Clif bars.

Put enough chamoy on it, a little shaved ice and a tamarindo straw and they're delicious!

There was a mango variety in southern Belize, aptly called 'peach mango'. Mmmm.

Yes and yes. I've done it 3 times. Once in the rain for the beginning. It's a *****, but an accomplishment. It was called off last year for the covid. Should be a good time.
Friday. Drive up. Do ride around Tourch Lake. 50 miles ish. Dinner camp out.
Saturday. ride 200 K . Eat a big dinner. Then either camp again or drive home. Sunday is Father's day.

Dad's done himself a bit of a mischief. He was putting up some shelves in the basement. He just won't stop... anyway the next morning his right "knee" was hurting. From hip to ankle.... his description. So he took it easy all day rubbed some linament ointment on it. Next morning the pain migrated to the left "knee" and worse pain and no strength.
a couple M.r.i's later. Complete collapse of a disk in his spine resulting in pinched nerves. Looks like he's going to get stabilization surgery, couple rods and a few screws..

So , Monday is lawn day. I cut front and back. The mower hast been right. Runs slow, doesn't cut well, pops and coughs. Cleaned and regapped the plug. Dropped the float bowel. cleaned out the cruds. Tweeked the carb and unstuck the linkage. Now it has high and low speed. Sharpened and balanced the blade. Then recut the front yard.
Nice.. I need to get my weed whip out of the storage facility. Soon.

I cut one of my lawns today. Pressed a button and off I went. It was 87F with 45% humidity. No jacket required.
