I mile or two round trip for pancakes at the local diner. Much of the convenience of living in Arlington is the result of having a bike, In any case, temperatures were in the 60s and I vividly re-experienced the feeling of soaring above the road that I had on my first bike trips as a child. The loud sound, halfway between a whoosh and a buzz, of Brood X of the periodical cicadas was much reduced. It picks up drastically as the day warms. The insects have emerged after 17 years of underground "lockdown" and I think we all identify with them.

Weekend Commuting

I commuted 10km to work today mostly downhill so nice and easy. The return Journey is going to be a lot harder though!

Not today so far, but I rode yesterday. I did my birthday ride. First I rode with my wife on our tandem on a 59 mile group ride. Then I got on my single and rode the 17 mi8les home from that group ride start. I designed the route and the starting location with that goal in mind. It was a beautiful sunny day for it. I'm out of shape because of the Covid year limitations and a couple of minor health issues, so I had a bit of a struggle with cramps toward the end but my legs feel fine today. I think I was dehydrated, not being used to the warm weather combined with not being in top shape. Plus I had done Z5 intervals, then a hard gym workout the next day and only one day of rest before the ride. Excuses, excuses! I don't usually do birthday rides, because by this date I'll have done a few rides with more mileage than that so that it becomes irrelevant. I guess I had something to prove to myself this year!

Two 20 mile rides in the last 2 days, first consecutive day rides in 2021. Sunny, light winds, high 79s-low 80s ... couldn't be better, IMO. Tried out some Aegend sun sleeves from Amazon. I liked them, but my arms look darker today than they did Friday, so I'm considering something with a reputable brand name. I've been riding faster over the past few weeks; I might try out the next to slowest group of the Evanston Bike Club.

My doc changed my meds last week. All my BP readings since then have been within within guidelines, but I sorta want to pass out when I get off the bike. Certainly if I stand up too fast from a sitting position at home, I feel dizzy for a minute or so, which is a symptom of low BP. .

Not today but yesterday during a weekend trip down to SoCal for my daughter's 1 year delayed college graduation. My usual coastal ride with my bff:

25 mile ride today on the local MUP heading north out of town along the Des Moines river. It's a fine trail that has been broken up due to construction on the interstate. So I took a gravel detour. The ride has lots of tree cover and plenty of places to stop for water which is good because most of the trail is very isolated. It also has a few decent climbs and lots of rollers. I like the rollers and the climbs as they help me get my heart rate up and they provide great views.

I took my 1973 Motobecane Grand Record on the ride. It handles gravel well with 700 x 35c Schwalbe mondial tires. Just think of the old Moto as a gravel bike from long before gravel bikes became a thing, The acorn saddlebag I just picked up is pretty sweet. It comfortably fits a 32 ounce nalgene bottle, my repair tools, two tubes, suntan lotion, etc.

The gearing works for me on the few 10% grades (50/34 crank with a 5 speed 14-28 freewheel). The first pic is where the MUP really begins along the river once you cross an old converted railroad bridge. The second is from the beginning of the gravel "detour." The third is from the dam looking out at the city reservoir. The third is home sweet home. It was a hot day and it was good to wrap this ride up.

27 miles Wed night into the ghost town of Seven Springs NC's downtown area impacted by flooding. Mon & Tues night rides were on my just completed '73 Raleigh Grand Prix, but no ride photos . No riding since Wednesday as I shift into golf mode for the Father's Day family tourney that's probably gonna be ugly on my end.

Interesting to me in this photo that at least one of every blinking light is caught lit....never seen that happen before

My wife scheduled herself to work and then scheduled her dog a grooming appointment without considering my ride schedule. I got about 25 miles in anyway.

My hotel room wasn’t ready when I arrived in Omaha for the College World Series so opted for a short bike ride. It felt so good to get the heart rate up after sitting in the van for 2 days.

Found a really nice concrete MUP and rode for 24 miles. It looks like there are a lot of these close by and I can even use my road bike on them.

It was 90 degrees but with the lower humidity and cloudy skies it felt great.

Did You Ride Today?

It was a good weekend to ride. My good mate that I rode and raced with from high school in the 70's has his annual birthday ride. This year the goal was 62 miles (his age of course). We rode 70 miles just to make sure.

They're doing great aren't they - hopefully keeping it going against Vandy tonight. Daughter Liz finally has something to howl about sports-wise.

53 miles and was 91* when finished. That’s pretty warm for the PNW area. Went through 4 large water bottles.

Set out good and early (06:26) for a 60.5 km ride on the old Bianchi Nyala, 741 m vertical gain. Early to avoid the heat.

14miles Jupiter Coral Cove Park to Hobe Sound and back, started 8am. Not very hot, but humid (dew point 74F) and few gentle, warm sprinklers. Official weather:
"Broken clouds, 79°F, Feels like 79°F, Humidity 74%, Wind 11mph from ESE - by Klimat.app". Overall great ride, a bit stiff a the end, I guess I need to do this more often
